As the priest was giving the final blessing at the end of Mass last Sunday I noticed that the altar candles had never been lit. Big deal? Little deal? No problem?

Not a big deal, and the celebrant probably noticed it and spoke to someone about it.
One time someone forgot to light the candles before Mass in my church, and right before Mass I noticed the Pastor himself lighting the candles. I am sure he spoke (kindly) to someone about it, and it has not happened since.

Most likely the altar server or sacristan was supposed to light them but just happened to forget. This happened to me a few years back, and I wasn’t told about it in a nice manner. Needless to say, I never forgot to light them again.
