I’ve seen some videos of a UGC baptism (specifically, at St. Elias, in Canada) where there a 3 candles on the baptismal font. Is this general practice? And if so, what is the meaning? Is it to identify the sanctifying presence in the waters?

The practice varies. Three represents the Most Holy Trinity. It is not for the water. A candle can represent the Light of Christ.*Priest: *Receive this lighted candle and strive throughout your entire life to shine with the light of faith and good works. That, when the Lord comes, you may go out with all the saints to greet Him with light and to enter with Him into the chambers of His heavenly glory, there to reign with Him for ever. Amen.
Also singing

All you who have been baptized into Christ
have put on Christ. Alleluia.

and Prokimen* (Psalm 26, Tone 3):* The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?
* verse*: The Lord is the refuge of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?

Would the Latin equivalent be our placing the Paschal candle next to the font?

It certainly is analogous, but I wouldn’t consider it equivalent in that it doesn’t quite represent the Trinity, and the Paschal candle is used to bless the water for baptism. 🙂

Hi, the candles probably signify the Three Persons of the Holy and Blessed Trinity, God Almighty.
