Candles?

I pray every morning in our Catholic parish before school and after Easter there aren’t the usual set of candles, rather a set of …8-12? Why the change? Can I light one or is it for something else? (I usually light one and pray the Hail Mary and pray for her intercession and also the intercession of St. Joseph) I’m just learning and would appreciate an explanation.

Also, why is the Holy water taken away before Easter and replaced with beads or sand?

Candles: This may be a due to a lack of candles, a need for more room for Easter lilies and other flowers, or just a change the parish was planning to make anyway in the arrangement of candles. If you’re not sure about whether or not you can light one, call the parish office and just ask. They won’t mind one bit, and you’ll have your answer without worry.

Holy water: The holy water absolutely **should not **be replaced with sand or beads. The holy water is removed after mass on Holy Thursday evening (the only mass that can be said that day without dispensation) and replaced with holy water at the Easter Vigil. I’ve always thought that this represented the waters of baptism – the first sacrament of initiation for converts at that mass. But that is entirely my own opinion.

Hopefully someone can give you a more complete answer to your excellent questions.

Thank you Gertie, I guess I will have to call and ask about the candles or perhaps if I see someone after Adoration tomorrow night. I was thinking there was some significance or symbolism.
