Can anyone give an honest report of the origin of the candy cane?
Is or was it a Christian signal in England during a period when Christ was erased from public display as some are promonting in the current U.S.A.?

Muy Bien! Thank you. I cannot open the reference of the book " The Legend of The Candy Cane" that is printed on the bottom of the story you sent. If you can would you please send me the reference so I can read the book by obtaining it here in the Lone Star State.

Vaya con Dios.

**Below is the cut and paste version of the link above. There are also other links available underneath this on the site. This is what I remember the candy cane to traditionally represent - beautiful, isn’t it? Oh, and Happy Christmas to you!!

The Meaning of the
Candy Cane

Code:
*** The fascinating story behind the candy cane ...
The birth, ministry, and death of
Jesus Christ are signified through
the elements of the candy cane ~

JESUS CHRIST is …
our Good Shepherd (staff shape) ~ 1 Pt. 5:4
our Rock (hard candy) ~ 1 Cor. 10:4
our Sinless Savior (white) ~ 2 Cor. 5:21
our Sacrifical Lamb (red) ~ Eph. 1:7

**The STRIPES symbolize pain inflicted upon
Jesus before his death on the cross and a bold
stripe to represent the blood he shed for
mankind. The three stripes can also represent
the power and presence of the Trinity
(the Father, Son and Holy Spirit). **
**The smell and taste of PEPPERMINT relate
to the herb hyssop. Psalm 51:7 states,
“Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean,
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” **
The candy cane is meant to be shared –
broken into pieces for all to share. That
reminds us of Jesus’ words, “This is my body
which is broken for you” (1 Cor. 11:24).
What a sweet
way to share the Gospel !
And you just thought it was good candy 🙂

Even if it’s not 100% true, the use of the Candy Cane as a teaching device is a great idea 🙂

Search Snopes and Straight Dope. I think I read the answer in at least one of them. S.D. is kind of crass at times but readable to me:shrug: , and Snopes is pretty searchable, but stay away from their forum IMO; the main page index is where the real researched info would be.
IIRC, the candy cane is just a ribbon candy, made long and thin and hooked for convenient carrying, but it’s worth looking up again.
