How did you figure that out when cannabis is proven to increase anxiety?

Also, how do you find a legitimate source when it’s against the law?

Interesting. The next poster down from you stated they made it against the law in AZ. It was legal in all 50 states before I left for Iraq, so I do appreciate the info. It could be that the increased anxiety some people suffer, is due to the fact that it IS in most circumstances illegal. And the poor person is afraid of getting caught. In states like Michigan, it is legal for medical purposes. That is probably the best route to go at this point. It is also interesting to note, that anti depressants cause an increase in suicidal idealogy, and suicide attempts. Yet they ARE legal. 🙂

Just be sure you buy it from a legitimate source. Also, I have heard different things about it. I personally think pot is better for a person as pain killer, than the narchtics the doctors push, and for some people It is better for anxiety than the stuff the docs push. In moderation of course. Over doing anything can be bad. 🙂
And what are your medical credentials to give such medical advice?

Think this needs to be reported to the moderators.

Or it’s because its a drug which has side effects. I know some people who smoke cannabis and aren’t scared of the consequences, yet I’ve seen how anxious and paranoid they get while they’re “high”. Checking things several times, etc.

Medicinal cannabis is different to the type you get off the street by far. Anti-depressants are just that, anti-depressants. The reason some person found a link between the use of anti-depressants and suicide attempts is because you’re more likely to be on anti-depressants anyway if you are suicidal. It’s like saying that paracetamol causes an increase in pain. Yes they are linked, but you do need a little bit of knowledge to realise that one causes the other, and not the other way round.

Also, do you have any links/references to the claims you’re making?

The DEA is also moving to make spice illegal in all the States.

“Spice” now illegal in Arizona, DEA moves for national ban.

I have attended Catholic Mass for the past 44 years and have read most of the Bible, I do not believe that there is any scriptural basis for the conclusion that Marijuana is the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil nor does Genisis support the conclusion since it is not a “tree” and does not bear “fruit”.

Surprisingly to many, Catholicism actually relies on the Bible for most of its teachings, supplemented of course with Tradition, etc. Since I’m not aware of any unique Bible verse devoted to this plant I find it doubtful that it will become a central part of Catholic teaching. To the contrary we are taught, (I’m paraphrasing from the Gospel of Luke), Man does not live on bread alone, but on the word of God. Clearly a plant is not the “Word of God”. Kinda a big problem for an increased devotion to this plant, if ya ask me.

Peace, g.

mcmanweb.com/FDA_suicide.htm

Heres one for kids.

Quoted directly from the link you gave me -
The warning specifically links antidepressant use to suicidal behavior in four percent of kids on these drugs compared to two percent for kids on placebos.
2% difference between the two groups isn’t enough to convince anyone that antidepressants will lead to an increase in suicidal behaviour.

However I will challenge your reference and raise you this more up-to-date quote -
The risk of serious suicide attempts or death by suicide generally decreases in the weeks after patients start taking antidepressant medication, according to a new study led by Group Health Cooperative researchers and published in the January issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry. The study also found that the risk of suicidal behavior after starting 10 newer antidepressant medications is less than the risk posed by older medications.
These findings challenge a 2004 advisory by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which warned that suicidal behavior may emerge after treatment with the newer antidepressant drugs has begun.
“Our findings show that, fortunately, suicide attempts and death by suicide are rare following the initiation of antidepressants,” says Greg Simon, MD, MPH, a Group Health psychiatrist and the lead researcher on the study. “The period right after people start taking antidepressant medication is not a period of increased risk. In fact, risk after starting medication is lower than before.”

At the end of the day, you should take the medical advice of your doctor. If they tell you that antidepressants are the best treatment, then they know best. No scaremongering articles should dictate to you medical advice, and this is definitely not the forum to be giving it out in. No pun intended.

And you still haven’t see the “study”.

Just because an anonymous user on an internet forum says there is a study does not mean there is such a thing.

The user must provide links to the study or journal articles about it to prove such a thing.

Until that happens what they say about such a “study” is worth about as much as garbage.

OK, Happy. I can get more. This study also adresses the anxiety and depression issue.

Ok, I can find more. I got interrupted by a mortar attack, so I will get back to you, once I am able. peace 🙂

The study was carried out on rats, not humans. Therefore any attempt by you to assert that the same is true in humans is not backed up. The quote below is from the article you just posted.
Jacobs says it could be that HU210 and THC do not have the same effect on cell growth. It could also be the case that cannabinoids behave differently in different rodent species - which leaves open the question of how they behave in humans.
Zhang says more research is needed before it is clear whether cannabinoids could some day be used to treat depression in humans.

Thanks for the article but it is about a “synthetic chemical similar to the active ingredient in marijuana”. So the study you speak of through this article does not state that marijuana promotes brain cell growth.

Nice try though.

Now do you wish to respond to my concern that you are giving out medical advice here which you are unqualified to do.

whatever, I tell you I live with these people and spent years of my life dealing with the messes they left for other people. If they were not brain damaged then they better come up with another excuse.

You are both naive and ignorant if you think you can dope regularly and not pay the price, or worse yet, put the burden on other to pay the price.

If you are now using illegally you are personally morally responsible and bear the guilt for drug violence now ravaging Mexico and making life here on our border, in our towns, increasingly dangerous.
Scientific evidence refutes what you have to say. It’s not the marijuana that has made these people careless and irresponsible, they were most likely careless and irresponsible to begin with. Go to any college campus, where you see the most brilliant teachers, innovators and geniuses the country has to offer, with IQs in the 140-160 range, and a LARGE number of those professors smoke marijuana. Some people who use it are jerks, but many people who use it are normal, hard-working individuals who use it in moderation and harm neither themselves nor others.

Also, one can very easily grow their own plants at home without contributing in any way to drug violence or Mexican gangs.

come back to me when your kids are hooked or involved with a pothead and are picking up the shards of their lives

Which scientific evidence is that then?

Notice how they love to throw out these vague claims with out linking to any creditible sources.

Or when they do the souces do not say what they are making them out to say (such as growing brain cells).

Indeed. I have a funny feeling that they will either continue to provide dud evidence, fail/refuse to provide any, or they will stop posting altogether. It’s usually what happens when you challenge posters who make plenty of vague claims and need to be repeatedly asked for sources.

But I would like to think that doesn’t happen and they do provide interesting sources, I find I learn a lot and enjoy debates when the opposing “sides” are equally weighted.

Cigarettes kill. Cannabis frees the mind. If Carl Sagan can smoke marijuana to free his mind as he said it did, so can I.

So the only test for you is if someone makes the claim that it frees their mind?

Then I assume you use LSD as well as many people claim that it also frees their mind.

If cannabis frees the mind, then it lets it loose into a prison.
Researchers have found that heavy marijuana use impairs the ability of young people to concentrate and retain information. Regular marijuana use has been shown to be associated with cognitive deficits and poor academic performance. This may be especially problematic during teens’ peak learning years, when their brains are still developing.
One study found an association between an increase in adolescent marijuana use and a decrease in the likelihood of attaining at least a high school education.
Research found that youths with an average grade of “D” or below were more than four times as likely to have used marijuana in the past year as youths who reported an average grade of "A."10
Students who have smoked marijuana within the past year are more than twice as likely to cut class than those who did not smoke, and health problems associated with using marijuana can keep students from attending school due to illness.

Cannabis destroys brain power and lowers IQ, a study has found.
The drug is already known to slow reaction times, block memory and cause panic attacks, drowsiness, confusion and hallucinations.
But smoking cannabis five times a week can also have a measurable effect on intelligence.
Canadian researchers have assessed how IQ changes after smoking cannabis. The eight-year study at Carleton University, Ottawa, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, involved 70 children.
They were first tested between nine and 12 years old and again at 17 to 20. The IQs of those who smoked more than five joints a week dropped by an average of four points.
Such an effect could dramatically increase the number of people considered to have low intelligence, if they all smoked cannabis.
Study author Dr Peter Fried said that, individually, a four point fall might not be very noticeable.
‘But in the general population it is estimated that around 6.5 per cent of people have an IQ of 77 or less, and such a drop as a whole would bring that number up to around 11 per cent.’
But there were signs that young people who had smoked cannabis for up to three years could regain their IQs if they gave up.

puzzleannie:

I have known MANY people who smoke/have smoked various amounts of marijuana throughout their lives and have yet to meet ONE person whose life has been adversely affected by it (no lost jobs, no dropping out of school, no prison/jail time, no divorces, DUIs etc. caused directly or indirectly by marijuana). On the other hand, I know LOTS of people who have gotten DUIs, lost jobs, ruined familial relationships, become depressed/attempted suicide, etc. as a result of alcohol use and abuse.

Also, you cannot become “hooked” on marijuana because unlike alcohol, it is NOT physically addictive.
