I just wanted to talk my opinion at this. As a guy that is becoming more and more religious, and openly seeking God, I just wanted to say that after about 2 years of smoking cannabis, directly resulting in my thinking more and more about the meaning of life, stumbled upon Catholicism and Christianity.
Note that it was God who brought out your curiosity in Catholicism – NOT smoking pot. God is able to use our flaws and our sinfulness to His purposes; even an alcoholic, for example, can be awakened to God’s truth through a drunken experience. Don’t confuse God using your stoned curiosity to bring you closer to Him with the notion that smoking marijuana brought you closer to God.
I agree with a lot of Catholicism, except for when it comes to this plant.
Actually, the Church has no moral teaching on the use of marijuana per se. She does, however, condemn the ILLEGAL use of drugs, because of the great evils that are done by drug traffickers. In the mind of the Church, a nation has the right to ban a substance, and if it does, its people are morally obliged to obey that law. Period.
I used to drink a lot, and lose my mind but when it comes to cannabis, my mind became more introverted and ask questions about life. I understand that Rastafari believe it to be the tree of life, from Garden of Eden. Which when thought about, is an extremely beautiful thought. This being said, it is the only plant that is found all over the world, originally.
The Rastafarians also believe that Hale Salessi, dictator of Ethiopia, was God incarnate. I’d recommend a modicum of skepticism when evaluating the beliefs of Rastafarianism, or any religion for which a mind-altering substance is a vital part.
My belief is that, it should be a sacrament and holy thing to do and should be a rare thing, to bring you closer to God. The bad thing is, it is illegal. For whatever reason. I see a rise in atheism, resulting from that. Criminals become wealthy from it, which is truly wrong.
Unfortunately, you have a misguided idea of what a sacrament is. Sacraments are supernatural gifts that connect the physical world with the spiritual. None of the sacraments of the Church contain or need any altered mental state or “higher consciousness” – that’s not what they’re for. They are given to us to purify us of our sins, strengthen our faith and our will, and unite us with Christ.
The “rise in atheism” you see should not be attributed to the illegality of marijuana – it’s the result of man’s selfishness and pride.
Peace,
Dante
