I haven’t read the Pope’s entire address but it has to be good when he says we (at least we canon lawyers) should “love canon law.”

As to the revisions: a couple of years ago, I saw an earlier draft of the proposals. I thought it was a better arrangement of canons, at least, and some advancements in the text itself. We shall see how the final product looks… Someday, I hope I can buy a new Code of Canon Law without worrying about the next big change that will make it obsolete.

I’m confused by all the Pope’s statements in the article about how canon law shouldn’t be something the powerful use against the poor, etc.

How exactly do the powerful use canon law to penalize the poor? I am unaware of poor people being subjected to all sorts of canon law that doesn’t equally apply to richer people. Nor do I see bishops putting the canon law smackdown on a lot of poor people in their dioceses.

As you have seen a draft of proposed revisions, can you shed any light on what our Pope is vaguely talking about this time? Does it have to do with divorced and remarried people again? Or women who’ve had abortions, or what?

I think he is probably using “poor” in a non-economic way…“poor” in terms of lacking in authority or influence. Law is for all in the Church and applies to all, from “top to bottom”, and so those who have authority should not think to exempt themselves from law, in particular penal law. As a matter of fact, several sections of penal law only applies to clerics. And, we’ve seen how not applying that law can lead to problems.

As for the revisions, the two caveats are that what I saw was an older draft and it was only Latin. So, it may have changed and I did not take the time to carefully comprehend the text…just looked at how it compared to the current law and looked for some differences.

That being said, I don’t recall anything about divorce/remarriage and the canon about procuring an abortion was not changed.
