Do some traditionalist priests/communities still give out penances based on the old canonical norms, i.e. sin x = n days of fasting?
If so, how does this fare? I can’t imagine going to confession and being given hundreds of days of fasting for my penance. If that’s the stated penance, does that then mean that you can go and pray the rosary or the stations of the cross (being a plenary indulgence) instead of doing the prescribed number of days?
In a way, this seems like a much more satisfying way of having confession, because you know when you’ve done enough penance to remit your time in purgatory, though I’m not sure it’s still valid since they stopped expressing the value of partial indulgences in the same way anymore.
