What is the process for this? I thought it was something along the lines of doing a search to make sure they did not commit any big sins to merit them hell, then three miracles through their intercession to prove they are in Heaven. Am I right? Is there a list of the various miracles for the various saints?

The wonderful thing is, that God makes ALL who come to be saved, Saints. IF you are washed in the blood of JESUS you are a Saint. WE must be perfect to go to heaven and that is WHY JESUS came to shed HIS blood for us. HE wants us to be perfect by HIS righteousness. Read the book of Romans and find out the wonders of the gospel.

This post seems to presume that Catholics believe that the only people who are “saints” are the ones canonized by the Church. That is emphatically not the case.

Canonization is the process by which the Church determines with certainty that a person is, in fact, a Saint. Because it involves a public declaration, it is a specific process of which the end result is a declaration of the teaching Magisterium of the Church that the person lived a life of heroic sanctity and of whom it can be said with perfect assurance that he or she is in Heaven.

My beloved Grandmother is doubtless among the blessed. But she may not be publicly recognized as someone whom the Universal Church may honor as we honor the canonized Saints.

Being “saved” is NOT something to do with HOW BIG your sins are!!!
The LORD died for even tiny tiny sins. You will NOT go to heaven with even a tiny sin in your life. That is WHY HE came down to earth to pay the debt of our sins-----HE made the WAY by HIS shed blood for you and me----IF we will come to HIM and accept the gift of HIS salvation

Canonization was once referred to as “being raised to the altars,” and that phrase shows how hard the Church’s job is to investigate so that the person’s life would be an example. It’s an investigation of sins, but also of teachings and opinions that, while not keeping the person out of heaven, have problems that make the person an unlikely or problematic role model. One of our Holy Father’s first acts in this area was to return a beatification candidate to investigation out of concern that he had written some anti-Semitic things. If so, the person might well be forgiven by God and in heaven, but not necessarily worthy of canonization and “raised to the altars” as a role model for the faithful. Some holy people have written so much that even though we are confident of their holiness, there is concern that a patch of bad teaching or outlandish political opinion would make them less worthy as role models, and so it takes decades to go through the pertinent material.

Forgot to add that religious columnist Kenneth Woodward of Newsweek wrote a great secular history called Making Saints about 15 years ago that really goes into great detail about how thorough the Church’s investigation is.

There is a process that is followed where an application is drawn up and facts are gathered, writtings and such are scrutinized and miracles are prooven. The result is supposed to be a public cultus of thological merit, heroic virtue and divine reprove or miraculous grace, as a leader in the church.

I think that a miracle or healing work either during the life of candidate or via intercession will do. But there needs to be at least one for beautification. Martyrs do not always need miracles. Miracles are used to win followers to the faith. As such are often trivial. They do not further theology or spiritual understanding as a dominate element. They are not terribly utilitarian. The saint must be primal origin of the miracle however. For instance having demons cast out of you doesn’t not qualify as a miracle nor does mere participation in a miracle. The cultus role of saints is the purpose of all of this and so miracles representative of the saints mercy and love are often chosen although there may not be a clear verification of the act as a miracle.
