Canopy over the Pulpit?

Hi there,

Quick question. I’ve been to 2 older Catholic Churches, and they both had a canopy over one of the pulpits. I’ve never seen that in any other Church that I’ve been to. Can anyone explain the significance of these to me? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!!

Before priests had microphones, the homily had to be heard by everyone in the church. The covers on the pulpits work like a sort of magnification of the priest’s voice so everyone can hear him.

If it’s for natural amplification, think of it like an acoustical shell behind a choir on stage. The sound reverberates through/off the canopy and out. Add that to the hard surfaces (marble, tile) in an older church, and it made it a whole lot easier to hear.

IMHO, it was a pretty cool invention.
