What is the basic things needed for a catholic to believe for salvation?

.
for baptism, one must affirm faith in the elements of the Nicene Creed (a child below the age of reason is baptized by virtue of his parents’ profession of faith). to receive the other two sacraments of initiation, Confirmation and Eucharist (we are talking adults here) you must be instructed in the basic elements of the sacraments, the sacred liturgy and the economy of salvation to the extent that you can make an informed decision to accept Catholic teaching and the disciplines that go along with the sacraments, including the requirement to confess serious sin to a priest for absolution. Further instruction in sacred scripture, doctrine, etc. is the lifetime task of mystagogy, or the study of the mysteries, which all adult Catholics should undertake.

Good question, and good answers so far. I’d like to point out one aspect of Catholicism that is not mentioned much. While Protestant Churches focus solely on getting to heaven, the Catholic Church believes in Purgatory. We believe it is a horrible place to be, and should be avoided, and that those already in it should be prayed for. Not only that, we believe that even if we have become Holy ourselves, we must help others become so also. To do this we must fully emerse ourselves in the bottomless lake of mystery that is the body of Catholic faith. The more we love, search and do on earth, the greater our Glory will be in Heaven. We believe in degrees of glory. So don’t settle for a shack in heaven, even though it might be bigger than Bill Gates’ mansion. Believe EVERYTHING, and get EVERYTHING. Jesus said that those who eat His body and blood will never go hungry. He meant spiritualy. In order to have your hunger satisfied you must be hungry. So if you take Communion as Jesus commanded, then you will never be hungry. That means you can feast on EVERY Catholic doctrine, and you will always be given opportunities to do good works. But you must hunger first.
As for the points you may be reluctant to believe, I’ll adress one of them.
God chose to use prophets here on earth, and His angels in heaven all throughout the Bible. He uses us to do His works too. He could do them himself, but He has choosen in His infinite wisdom to use His creations. That’s how you can think of Mary and the Saints, because it is an unnessecary stumbling block for thousands of people. Just accept that God has and will continue to use His creations how He chooses and get over it. He gave Mary to us as our Mother. It is a blessing. So why fight it?

My advice to you would be to talk to a priest about this and maybe the RCIA group at your parish church could help you out as well.

👋 Melanie
I think this is the best idea, if you ask them for a list of what you need to believe I’m sure it would only take them a minute, and they’d love to do it.

If your not enrolled in an RCIA program I really think you should look into it

I’m currently in the RCIA, getting ready for my baptism this Easter, so if you’d like to chat just PM me, I’d be more than happy to help out.

All the best

Genesis315:
Well, to make it simple, all you need to be saved is grace, specifically sanctifying grace. Therefore you need to believe everything that the Church teaches infallibly (ie concerning faith and morals). To reject one of these things with full knowledge and consent would be heresy, which I believe is a mortal sin. If you die in a state of mortal sin, you will not be saved.
I find this to be a great answer.

It would be helpful to me if you would explain your need for just a simple answer. It reminds me of someone who constantly used to demand only “yes” or “no” answers to questions. What I learned from experience is that no matter what answer was given, the questioner would then beat the answerer over the head and dissect the answerer without the benefit of anesthesia. [did I spell the word “dissect” correctly?]

Well, life isn’t that simple.

Use another example: what are the basic things - and only the basic things - you need to drive a car? well, there are control manipulations. There is how do you drive in snow and ice. There are traffic regulations and a whole host of laws and rules. And each state is different. And if you apply New York’s rules in New Jersey, you might get a ticket. Or worse.

Life is messy and complicated. Unfortunately.
