I’m a Christian and I’m converting from Pentecostal to Catholic hopefully on the upcoming Easter Vigil 2008.

However, I just recently got back from visiting the parish that I will be attending. I called our priest earlier and he said it was fine for me to come and talk to him…

I can’t believe how much I felt like I was being welcomed home… I almost broke down in tears when I was telling him some things… yet he told me not to worry about it… just address everything to God through prayer and let His Grace take over.

I just can’t believe that I felt at home.

I know now more than ever I want to become Catholic!

outstanding!!! what wonderful news! May God bless you all through your journey into the Church. It will be challenging at times but always keep your head up and do research on any areas that you may not understand. My advice is to always learn WHY the Church does things because alot of times she doesn’t always explain the why unless you delve into the history of it and read it for yourself.

The preceding posters have said some great things to you already.

Hanging around these forums, you get hit with so many controversies, as if the underlying questions weren’t tough enough.

Like somebody above said, the Church has reasons for everything, and they’re very sound. Don’t let something or somebody come around to be the “pin” to your “baloon.”

You’ll hear here, even from Karl Keating, that things are not rosy everywhere in the Catholic Church. This is true. Best to stick on the side of the traditional belief of the Church and hang in there.

Like in the Book of Judges, this is a time when people do what they want to do, even though that is not the right thing to do. Be like Ruth. See her statement of faith in Ruth 1.

Congratulations and have a wonderful journey to coming to the true church, the Roman Catholic Church. You bring back memories when i became a Catholic back in 1993. It was a wonderful, sometimes difficult journey but oh, so worth it. Hang in there and stay here a CAF for help and answers. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are not doing the right thing. Welcome home. The journey has just begun and yet the hard part is already over. 😉

I will keep praying that my Pentecostal father sees the light. Perhaps one day you can share what made you take that step towards Catholicism.
 
I know exactly how you feel. That was one of the reasons I kept coming back until I finally converted. There was something so right about the mass. It was what I had been looking for.

So I echo the others that have posted. Welcome home.

By the way, to add to that sense of belonging, the first time I received communion, I could feel, almost see, a great crowd of Saints and Christians passed on, all gathered about communing with us. It was a powerful experience, cementing in my soul that bond between the Church Militant, the Church Suffering and the Church Triumphant. The past 2000 years sort of melted away and in Christ it was all now, all of us together with him.

You may also find that after mass you don’t want to leave, that you belong right there with Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and when you are gone, you will feel the desire to go back and you will not feel that real peacefulness until you are back there, communing with Jesus Christ in communion with the people of the parish. There’s something very powerful there. I believe it is the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist that draws us to him.

You guys are even getting me more excited about joining the Church!

As our priest told me yesterday, “The Church is Divine, but it is run by humans.” So there you have it, we’re bound to slip and fall sometimes so I realized that’s where infallibility comes in… it protects the Dogma of the Church through the Holy Spirit.

I just finished reading a conversion story that you might enjoy. The book is called “No Price Too High: A Pentecostal Preacher Becomes Catholic” by Alex Jones. I got it from a locally owned Catholic book store, but they have it on Amazon.com if you cannot find it locally.

He was a preacher in Detroit for many years and after lots of study and some major upheaval more than 50 people from his church converted with him. It was especially noteworthy because I think it was the only time in many decades that a large group of black people or Pentecostals in the US has converted at the same time. (I know that I’ve fielded tons of questions as one black person who converted, so I cannot imagine the stir these folks caused.) It was an amazing story. I’m only sorry that I missed him when he spoke at my parish last year.

Fantastic news!!! I know exactly what you mean too. I converted from the Southern Baptist Church and when I too felt the entire time that I was simply coming home. It is amazing because theologically speaking I was moving into a very different system and yet if felt completely natural.

You have come home and all of your brothers and sisters in the Church both living and dead rejoice!

The Catholic Church is where your Merciful God wants you to rest and feel at peace. I felt that same way nine years ago (Hence the “Convert in 99”.) You will never feel the same about any other church now.

I suggest you look at this website closely, it will answer so many questions you might have about our faith. Are you a reader? I suggest you pick up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Everything we know and believe, in addition to the Holy Bible is in that book. You can send me a post with any questions and I will do my best to answer them.

We will pray for you. Keep talking to that priest. 👍
