I haven’t even looked at it - the title was enough to turn me off. On the apologists page they were discussing excommunication, and I decided to read up on it as it’s another Catholic principal that I know nothing of. Well, I googled it and like the third link listed (by most popular number mind you) was this link:

Uhh…that ticks me off!! I can’t believe there are actually sites such as this out there.

You know this is so ridiculous its a offense to the word ridiculous, first of all if they are atheist then why should they care to be excommunicated?!? Thats what I do not get, why try so hard to get away from something that to them does not exist?
This is another pathetic attempt to discredit a “illusion” they so dearly think is not there.
If people are going to be atheist at least be a happy one live by what makes you happy, have joy in your hearts, that you know God does not exist why are they always trying start up websites and groups to affiliate themselves with other atheists? I just think that deep inside their soul stirs the wantings of belonging, but God put that there so we may search for Him. Instead they look for each other to reassure themselves that what they think in theory is correct.

Pinky dont even get angry just pray for them, be firm in your faith and know that for every ill conceived notion that crops up the Church holds fast to all Truths. Even though there are websites like this there are just as many speaking the opposite.

I found it particularly interesting that among the recommended reading was “satanic verse”.

Another way of getting “in the mood” was to laugh at sacred things, indulge extra during Lent, etc. etc.

After reading this, I’m not convinced that this is coming from an atheist. Sounds more like it’s coming from a SATANIST.

There can be good reasons to officially separate oneself from the Catholic (or any other) Church though. One of the most obvious, is if you want to get married in your new religion and have your Catholic (or whatever) parents attend it, some Catholics are squeamish about attending weddings of marriages they don’t believe to be real, such as one contracted by a Catholic without a priest, so if you separate from Catholicism, they don’t have that problem.

At the very end of the article is a way to officially separate from Catholicism. The rest of the article is just silly. Excommunication is not necessary to remove your name from the roles. This is the procedure given at the very end of the article.

I’m in the UK, so the process might conceivably be different in Australia, but I’m in the process of having my formal renunciation of faith accepted.

All you do is find the diocese of the parish you were baptised in, contact the Chancellor of the Diocese, and explain that you’re not Catholic and wish to make a formal renunciation. A note is then made in the baptismal register that you have formally renounced the faith. No excommunication necessary, and very simple.
