I have 3 thoughts about this.
I too have some things I did while out of the church that really bother me and I have a hard time coming to terms with what I did, if these sins were forgiven. Two things have helped me with this.

- The other night I was praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet, pondering whether or not God has forgiven me. EWTN was on the tv in the background while I was praying. When I was done, it was between programs and they were doing a promo for a Mother Angelica show. On the screen were words from Mother Angelica, with her saying the words in audio. It was something to the effect of “Humans shouldn’t arrogantly assume that God’s love isn’t great enough that He doesn’t forgive us of our sins.” I thought that was perfect, and the perfect answer to my prayers.
- I was listening to a program about Divine Mercy. The host was relating a story about a fellow nun to Sister Faustina who wasn’t sure if she was forgiven of her sins, even after confession. She asked Faustina to ask Jesus if she was forgiven. Jesus told Faustina that it wounds him more that people can’t accept His forgiveness than the sins they committ against Him. Pretty strong message right there. If you’ve confessed your sins in repentance and contriteness, Jesus will forgive. After all, His message is “Trust in Jesus” on the Divine Mercy Image.
- Those Chick publications, while produced by anti-catholic sentiment, aren’t all bad. Every so often I find one laying around somewhere and I’ll pick it up. The one with the Skeleton on the cover saying “Hi There!” is a personal favorite of mine. Not because of what it says, but because the skeleton is so shocking.
