So yeah I cannot pick a patron saint… I need one before confirmation…I have narrowed it down to Saint Therese Saint Anne and Saint Teresa of Avila…Could Bl. Mother Teresa be picked as a patron saint? Please help me to pick one…I feel so close and drawn to all of them but I cannot pick one so any help would be so much appreciated!🤷

You’ve got it narrowed down to some wonderful women! Hard choice. You can look at confirmation names as choosing a saint you most admire or you can look at it as choosing a saint who has some special trait that you lack and would like the saint’s help with. You might ask yourself what significance each of these saints has for you and which of them possesses traits you most need. For instance, if you tend toward selfishness it might be Mother Teresa. If you’re a little more prideful than you should be, St. Therese might a good choice. If you shy away from responsibility or challenges, St. Teresa of Avila would be wonderful role model. I don’t know if you can choose someone who has not yet been canonized; maybe someone else on the forum does. Let us know what you choose!

Thanks so much! I will add you tol my buddy list then when I pick a patron I will let you know…

Maybe things have changed since I was confirmed 35 some years ago but…Why not just go with Theresa in honor of them all?..Or must you choose one saint and explain why???..I don’t recall that being part of the process.

We dont have to, but we are given the option of picking one certain saint as our patron…and I kind of would like to pick one as my patro.

I don’t think it truly matters all that much, you can always change it, it’s not like it’s bound to you forever.

Usually patron saints are assigned by parents when they name you. My patron saint is Jude. Maybe yours is St. Thomas???

Tommy’s just trying to figure out how to pick just one.

47 years ago in Catholic school, though, we did have to get up in front of the class and tell everybody why we’d chosen the names we did, but I think that was just the nun…

I had to make up a reason because I wanted Therese but my parents made me take the name Mary after my aunt…I was 9; what could I say??

Exactly…My confirmation class leader wants us all to pick one. and me being a convert into the faith I was not given one as a child…

Tommy, I think it’s good the way kids now are confirmed at a later age than we were (back during prehistoric times.) You guys have a better understanding of the commitment than we did. We had no choice in the matter; it was part and parcel of being 9 years old in Catholic school back then. We memorized a lot of stuff, got a gentle 'slap" on the cheek by the bishop, got our pictures taken in our confirmation robes and got presents. We were more scared of that slap by the bishop than we were concerned about confirmation. The older kids had a field day telling us stories about kids who’d been slugged so hard they fell over…:rotfl:

I think I was confirmed when I was 13, and my mum scared me saying when you go up there, the priest immediately knows all your sins throughout your whole life, and I was like…oh man, this is bad.

Luckily he didn’t 😛

I can’t even remember having to pick a name. If it comes down to it Tommy, just pick several names and play a game of darts, at least that way you had a hand in choosing, but not explicitly 😛

Hey, if you really can’t make up your mind, you could always let us choose it for you…(I know - NOT fair!) (I vote for Therese…) 😃

Mine is St. Teresa of Avila. The reason is that she was a great leader who was very obedient. These are traits that I admire and that I have need of. 🙂

My reasons for choosing St. Teresa of Avila for my confirmation name are probably among the most immature you’ll ever see.

Reason 1: There was another girl on my high school cross country team named Theresa who seemed nice.

Reason 2: I was taking Spanish in high school and wanted the Spanish spelling of Teresa rather than the French spelling for Thérèse of Lisieux.

There. Now the rest of you can feel more confident that when it comes to choosing a patron saint, you are at least better motivated than I was.

At this point, I can only hope that secretly, St. Teresa of Avila chose me, such that I made the right choice even if for the wrong reasons … :o
