Can't remember passage

First of all… I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Ok…now onto my question. A few days ago I was randomly reading a passage in the bible where Christ spoke of keeping a balance in ones faith and something about “the way”. I thought I had written down the verse, but, I obviously didn’t and now in trying to find the verse I can’t remember for the life of me the exact wording or which NT book it was in so I can at least do a search on it. :crying:

If anyone can help me find this verse I would very much appreciate it.

Is it John 14:2-6
In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
3] And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
4] And you know the way where I am going."
5] Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?”

That is the only place I recall His referring to Himself as **The Way. **However, I don’t see anything about balance there.
 
And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me. 14However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that agrees with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, 15and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. I think I should have been more clear in my explanation… I know there are MANY places in the NT speaking of the “The Way” as it was called before Christians were called Christians… I did a search of the bible online hoping to come up with what I read before, but didn’t. I just can’t remember in which of the NT books it was where “The Way” was mentioned where I had read about Christ speaking of keeping a balance in ones faith. It’s not specifically [fill in the blank] “The Way”… but I know the keeping a balance part was in in one of the chapters where “The Way” was contained in that NT book… Sigh… oh well I guess I will just have to continue using the search feature for the online bible and read through each instance where the word “way” comes up and hope I find it again.

Romans 14 seems to speak of keeping a sort of balance in one’s faith, so as not to cause those who are weak in faith to stumble, and mentions “the way” in verse 13:Then let us no more pass judgment on one another, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. (Romans 14:13)
Is this what you had in mind?

No, its not the verse, but I thank you for posting. The verse I am trying to remember is more about keeping a balance in ones faith in terms of not going to the extreme… not being too liberal with ones faith nor too conservative… That is the sense I got from it.

Instead of giving me a finger waving emoticon assuming that I am putting messages contrary to Catholic Church teaching in the bible… Just come out and say it… I prefer things said directly to me.

I am always loyal to the magisterium and teachings of the Church… If I can only find this way to give a sense of what the verse is trying to say how else to do you expect me to say it? As I said before the passage was about trying to keep a balance and not go to the extremes in ones faith… so that would be either too ultra liberal or too conservative… Yes, there it is again… and sorry if you don’t like it… but that is the sense I got from the passage… and I know the words “liberal or conservative” aren’t in the bible and I would think if I am using the word “sense” logic would tell you it is more about the feeling I got and not the actual words in the Bible.

And I am doing a search using the NAB bible from the United States Conference of Bishops website.

It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He as a demon’; the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ "

Will keep thinking about it and see if any others come to mind. If you figure it out, be sure to let us know which passage it is.

This passage is pretty good…not the one I was looking for, but is it along the lines of balance. You can see the contrasts in that no matter what John did…whether he came not eating or not drinking how he would still be accused of being a glutton or drunkard. I guess this would be a good passage to showcase the saying “you can’t please all people”.

Some verses I found along the lines of balance, but not the exact verse that I am STILL looking for on balance :crying: are the following were you see the word “temperate” used in terms of how the character of a Bishop, older men and women should be… It’s all along the lines of being “even-tempered”… of keeping a balanced character…

Titus 1:7-9

7 For a bishop as God’s steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled, 9 holding fast to the true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to refute opponents.

Titus 2:2

Bid that the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love and in steadfastness.

1 Timothy 3:11

[11] The women likewise must be serious, no slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things.

So, the search continues… and perhaps the Lord clouded my memory on the verse I am searching for so that I can read my bible more often. 👍 Which doesn’t hurt anyone and can only be of benefit to me.

I will let you know for sure when I finally find the verse and SCREAM victory. lol

b. curbing one’s desires and impulses, self-controlled, temperate**

Titus 2:2

Bid that the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love and in steadfastness.

1 Timothy 3:11

The English word temperate for these two verses is a bad translation of the original Greek word Nephaleos (nay-fal’-eh-os). Which means abstaining from wine.
 
Maryam, could you possibly be thinking of one of the passages where Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6?

Here are two from the Gospel according to Matthew:

You know this happens to me all the time. I come across something very relevant and personal and when I go back to look for it, it is as if it was never there!!! Of course it is there but I simply cannot find it no matter how slow or how pedantically I go through it.

I believe that this is God’s way of drawing us in. It will resurface again when you least expect it. God is a giver of surprises!

BTW the only one I can think of that might be of use concerning balance in one’s life is the following:
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matt. 16:24-26).

Matt. 16:24-26 and its related verse in Luke 9:23 are not talking about maintaining balance in one’s life. They are both claiming the complete opposite!
Dying to your old sinful self and coming alive in Christ is the context of these verses.

Revelation 3:15-22: John is reprimanding the church at Laodicea for being complacient.

1 Cor 8:78: Paul is instructioning believers to avoid partaking in food that was sacrificed to idol gods, if it is seen by a baby believer and causes them to become confused and question their faith in Christ.
