I have the good fortune of working with people from around the world – different backgrounds, different life experiences, different native languages.
More than once I’ve sat 2 feet away from someone looking at the same text (about a boring old project at work, nothing philosophical), and it takes a while for the two of us to come to the same understanding.
As I see more and more how a small subset of ‘religious’ people have and do corrupt messages for their own gain, I’ve felt it more and more important to truly understand Sacred scripture as ‘purely’ as possible. Me and the text, with as little extra noise introduced as possible.
But I’m also a realist – I don’t see myself learning ancient Hebrew and Greek, never mind the finer points of charged words like “maiden”/“virgin” or “kill”/“murder”.
So my question: how can I take responsibility for my understanding of scripture as well as if it was written by someone sitting 2 feet away from me, not two thousand years ago, half way around the world, and translated again (and again) by people I wouldn’t even begin to understand?
(With all due respect, please refrain from cluttering up this thread with “Because it is written in the Bible” or “Open your heart to the word of the Bible and you will see the light”. I understand those ideas, but I’m looking for more practical, literal ideas.)
