So did I. I’d ask an ICRSS canon about all this myself, but I won’t see one until the 22nd and I’m guessing chesterlab will obtain an answer long before then.
 
My guess is that it is an oversized version of a mantelletta, which used to be part of prelatial dress. I will be quite interested to hear the canons resolve the question.
 
Okay, in case anyone’s still interested…today, I asked one of the ICRSS canons about this vestment, and he called it a manteau de chœur, or “choir coat.” Note that I am in France; what this is called in English or any other language might be something totally different, as with the mozzetta, which is French is known as the camail. :whacky:

IIRC, the manteau de chœur is a mantellone. While I realize this is wikipedia, I believe the explanation is accurate.
