Osama Bin Laden - as everyone knows - has had the gravest responsibility for spreading hatred and division among people, causing the deaths of countless people, and exploiting religion for this purpose.
Faced with the death of a man, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on the serious responsibility of everyone before God and man, and hopes and pledges that every event is not an opportunity for a further growth of hatred, but of peace.”
On the one hand, it is written:
“Do not court death by your erring way of life,
nor draw to yourselves destruction by the works of your hands.
Because God did not make death,
nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living.
For he fashioned all things that they might have being,
and the creatures of the world are wholesome”(Wisdom 1: 12-14).
And again:
“Say to them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live” (Ezekiel 33:11).
It is in this sense that a Christian does not rejoice in the death of anyone, namely, death and punishment as such which, however, is an effect of God’s justice which as such is good.
On the other hand, it is written:
“For thou art not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with thee.
The boastful may not stand before thy eyes; thou hatest all evildoers” (Psalm 5: 4-5).
And in Proverbs 8:13, ,
Wisdom says:
“The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate”.
In Proverbs 6: 6-19:
“There are six things which the LORD hates, seven which are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies, and a man who sows discord among brothers”.
And further, Psalm 58: 10:
“The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance”.
And Proverbs 21:15:
“When justice is done it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers”.
And Psalm 11:7:
“For the Lord is just, and hath loved justice”.
Accordingly, though christians do not rejoice in punishment or death as such, they do rejoice in that all just punishment (namely vengeance which is a virtue, a part of justice, and assuming here that Bin Laden’s death was just) is an effect of justice and justice is good, it is a virtue and that such just vengeance prevents further harm to human beings and especially do they rejoice in the justice of God in which all true human justice is a participation of. Punishment that stops short of capital punishment and death has the
hope of being corrective and medicinal in nature for the repentance and conversion of sinners and in this way too punishment effected by justice can be a cause of rejoicing in a way for christians, “Rejoicing in hope” (Romans 12:12). Such ‘true’ justice and hope springs from charity which is the love of God and of our neighbor.
