Capuchin Names

When one becomes a Capuchin Franciscan Friar, do they have to change there name? If they do, do they adopt names or are they given names?

The Capuchin Franciscan Friars have not changed their names since the General Chapter of 1970. Most Franciscan communities to not change names. Notice, I said most, not all. In my community, we still do so.

The logic that the Sacred Congregation for Religious Lie and Secular Institutes (as it was called then) used was that those communities who wanted to show the link between the profession of vows and Baptism more clearly, could start by keeping the name given at Baptism. Many communities opted for this. However, the average person in the pew does not know this, because this is taught to postulants not to lay people.

During their postulancy, as the candidates study the vows and the effect of profession, they go through the relationship between religious profession and Baptism. By the time that they make vows, they are very conscious of the connection and keeping the baptismal name has special meaning to them.

Those friars who had changed their names before 1970 were allowed to keep their religious name or return to their baptismal name.
