Card Counting Christians

Here are some new age Protestant pastors that are making a living by counting cards in casinos. They have a network across the country with players, managers, and investors. They say they are “liberating the money from those who would do evil with it”. And that they want to live “in the gray” b/c it makes you question morality etc. etc…

At one point they let a Non-Christian on the team and then accused him of stealing money without any proof b/c “God told them”.

I don’t think gambling or counting cards is a sin but it seems that if you try to pursue a living in this sense b/c you don’t want to work a real job that contributes to society (which is what some of them have said, they brag about how little hours they work) that it could become a sin, possibly the sin of sloth or greed. My main problem is the fact that they bring Christianity into it, and think they are doing something good for Christianity when people find out their line of work.

This movie is on netflix instant if you have that and want to check it out. At one point they perform a non-valid baptism “in the name of Christ”.

I enjoy gambling about once a month and blackjack is my favorite game.

I’ve tried card counting, but there is really not much of an edge that can be gained any more. The casinos mostly use 8 decks and re-shuffle with 3 decks or so remaining. So even if you are counting and run into a favorable situation (the remaining cards are rich in 10’s), you still don’t know if you will reach them before the dealer re-shuffles.

So, I wonder if this group is full of boloney. In any event, I doubt it is as fruitful as they claim. Also, it is work and takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the game.

Anyway, I prefer to relax, have a few drinks, and side converstations which are not conducive to card counting. I definitely don’t think I could make a living at it, but it is a fun hobby, and the casinos give free hotel nights and some meals so it makes a night or two like a mini-vacation each month for less than I would spend for a couple rounds of golf.

I also stay within my means and if I’m on a winning streak, I usually give the winnings to charity.

Gambling in any way is betting on a future unknown.
If the future unknown becomes known by one gambler, then it is not gambling, but certainty.
It is immoral to place money on something when one gambler knowns for certain the outcome.
It no longer a game of chance and becomes a lie to pretend that it is, and if carried out, is stealing.

For example if I am know that a school bus drives down main street weekdays, and then bet someone that a school bus will do this on Wednesday, is plain stealing.

Just some thoughts.

It is also wrong for a gambling casino to bet against a mortgage that someone can’t afford to lose. And knowing this will really make a big difference to them I’m sure.
