In France, Cardinal Arinze decries liturgical abuses

Oct. 27 (CWNews.com) - The prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship spoke out sharply against liturgical abuses during an October 26 presentation in Paris.

Speaking at the Catholic Institute of Paris, Cardinal Francis Arinze (bio - news) decried the “banalization, desacralization, and secularization of the liturgy.” He rebuked priests who take an “overtly egocentric” approach to the liturgy, violating the norms of the Church. And he also criticized priests whose “false humility” leads them to “share their role with the laity.”

Yay!

Go Cardinal Arinze. He was my 2nd pick for Pope after BXVI

Extremely interesting post. The good Cardinal certainly knows what to say doesn’t he and not at all afraid to say it? A truly extraordinary man and one the Church is lucky to have,👍 👍 👍

I gather that the “banalization, desacralization, and secularization of the liturgy” in no way applies to drums, bass, electric guitar and electric keyboard. Just to defuse that issue right from the start. 🙂

Be interesting to see what happens after the French Bishops Conference in Lourdes next Month

Pax tecum!

Along these lines, I heard something absolutely HILARIOUS on the radio after B16 was elected. They were covering people that were unhappy with the election. They interviewed a group of “Catholic women” who said, “We are disappointed with the election of this pope. We were hoping for that African cardinal.” (emphasis added). I almost laughed out loud. Not only did they make themselves sound stupid, but I also remember telling my mom and brother, “Wow, do they mean Cardinal Arinze? The one who has the EXACT SAME views as Cardinal Ratzinger?”

I would love to see him visit and observe the liturgical practices in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles…that would be interesting…especially when he gets a eyeful of those “kool-aid” pitchers that are used in alot of parishes…

And then the glass chalices that the Precious Blood is poured into after the consecration.

I think Cardinal Arinze is the Successor of Cardinal Ratzinger (not as a Pope but in being a cardinal) They were both very strict with the liturgy and i admire that… The Liturgy is not just an activity of the church but it is a Divine Worship and must not be played or changed by people. It is an order and it must follow the tradition.

I don’t know why some people celebrate the mass as if they were just doing their charismatic worships like singing with hands raised and with those drums and electric guitars. It is really sad that the sacrifice is being degraded by some.

'Ja ever wonder what part of Cardinal Arinze’s many statements the hierarchy in Los Angeles and Orange County can’t understand?
Could dancing girls convey his messages better?😃

Why does it not apply to drums, bass…etc?

I was kidding, anticipating the reaction of some others. Of course it is eminently reasonable to think that terms such as “banalization” and “secularization” do apply to the rock band arrangements of instruments found in many churches, as well as to the pop-sounding music played on them. But the rock band ensemble folks don’t want to hear that.

Well, their views aren’t exactly the same, and I think they would differ in some respects even over the liturgy (I seem to remember Cdl. Arinze advising against a wider TLM indult). But, nonetheless, those women were indeed dumber than a rocks of box… er, how does that saying go?

I guess I meant in regards to the issues that these women no doubt thought were the ones that needed some changing.

gotcha…sorry, I didn’t catch the humor at first…

 you mean no more high school jazz band ensembles? No more Les Mis or Andrew Lloyd Weberesque sing songs?

How on EARTH can the Church survive?!?! 😛
