VATICAN CITY (CNS) – The highest ranking U.S. bishop at the Vatican says this month’s Synod of Bishops on the family should mark the end of a high-level debate over whether to make it easier for divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive Communion.

“The matter really has to be clarified at this point so that this doesn’t continue,” Cardinal Raymond L. Burke, prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature, told Catholic News Service Oct. 1. “For this to go on for another year, it can only do harm.”

By church law, divorced and civilly remarried Catholics are not admitted to Communion unless they obtain an annulment of their first, sacramental marriages or abstain from sexual relations with their new partners, living together as “brother and sister.”

Well, hopefully the synod will come up with a clear method to tackle this pastoral problem.
 
Pastoral problem with important doctrinal implications. Let’s not fall into the trap of seeing this as “merely pastoral”.
 
The whole point of having both this synod and the one next year is for the bishops to talk with each other. I wish all of them would stop making public statements and wait until they meet. This way you end up with factions, and once someone has come out publicly with a certain position, their egos won’t allow them to listen to someone else’s view and perhaps change their opinions. They’re getting to be just like Congress and that’s not a good thing.

Cardinal Burke is right…for the truth cannot be changed. What was wrong yesterday, is wrong today and will still be wrong tomorrow.
