Cardinal-designate Raymond Burke stressed to Catholic voters in a recent interview that they have a “very serious” obligation to uphold the truth of “moral law” in the upcoming mid-term elections. He specifically cited protecting unborn children from abortion and defending traditional marriage.

Cardinal Burke is make it harder and harder for Catholics to rationalize voting for pro-abortion candidates!

While the comments from Cardinal-designate Burke are what needs to be said, they are by themselves inadequate. We cannot forget that the other American cardinal-designate - Archbishop Wuerl - not only remains silent on this issue but has openly disagreed with Burke about the reception of communion by pro-abortion Catholic politicians. So long as Burke is virtually alone among American bishops in taking this position his influence will be minimal.

Even BXVI’s comments last week to the Brazilian bishops: “when the fundamental rights of the person or the salvation of souls requires it, pastors have a serious duty to make moral judgments even in political matters” will have little effect (in this country) until American bishops openly agree and speak out. I’m not holding my breath.
