BALTIMORE (CNS) – The selection of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary degree from Loyola College of Maryland prompted Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore to direct that no representative from the Archdiocese of Baltimore be present at the commencement exercises. Giuliani supports keeping abortion legal, which the Catholic Church opposes. “The cardinal is disappointed in Loyola’s decision to honor Mr. Giuliani,” said Sean T. Caine, archdiocesan spokesman. The commencement took place as scheduled May 20 at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena. In a letter dated May 18 to David Haddad, Loyola’s interim president, Cardinal Keeler said he hoped the Lord would turn the event into a teaching moment.

Why are they honoring him? Because he’s pro-choice or maybe because of his truly inspirational leadership after 9/11?

If the former, Keeler is right. If the latter, Keeler isn’t.

Why do they honor Hitler? Because he killed 6 million Jews or because he made the trains run on time? If the former…

Are you equating Rudy Giuliani with Adolf Hitler? Amazing that you could even think of doing so.

Just as I feared. You miss the forest for the trees. I was merely pointing out the absurdity of the prior comment.

You raise an interesting question. Does anyone know what teh Church’s policy was towards Hitler and other ranking Reich officials? Were they banned from Catholic institutions? What about at the Holy See?

You made a uncalled-for blatantly outrageous statement.

My question was valid. The reason for the invitation is relevant to evaluating the appropriateness of inviting a speaker to a commencement.

If Giuliani was going to speak about pro-choice, he should not have been there. If he was going to speak about the futures of those graduates in light of a post Iran War world, that would be reasonable.

It’s called an absurdity, actually.

Hence the Hitler reference. As long as Hitler talks about train schedules, he’s cool? 😛

Don’t know if he ever made much reference to the Reichsbahn. He was a big proponent of super highways.

Actually, it was Mussolini who supposedly got the Ferrovie del Stato running on time.

And my question is still valid. Giuliani is a highly respected individual. Most Americans were most impressed by how he acted after the WTC attack.

And it is you and apparently that bishop who miss the forest for the trees. Look at the whole man, not at one spot of grease on his suit.

Pretty big grease spot, my friend. So, in your world view, inviting Hitler would be cool?

No. Hitler is unique in world history, as is Stalin and Ghengis Khan and Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot, and others along that line. They are not comparable with any ordinary people, least of all with an admirable mayor…

And I would have invited Giuliani. The “spot on his suit” does not detract from the superb things he did after the WTC disaster.

Hitler did an admirable job keeping the trains running too. A Prussian nature?

You know little about the German railways. They’ve always been excellent, even during the days of the Länderbahnen. Hitler had nothing to do with their day-to-day performance.

BTW, Hitler was an Austrian, not a Prussian.
