Hi, I have a question for you guys.

I was reading through George Weigel’s book “God’s Choice” about the election of the Holy Father, and Weigel mentioned that Cardinals Mahony and McCarrick could be considered somewhat liberal.

What makes this so? I can’t find info about it anywhere. I know about Cardinal Mahony’s dispute with EWTN (or rather it was the other way around), but it seemed very trivial, not substantial at all, but more about semantics and rhetoric.

I also would have thought that Cardinal McCarrick was more of a conservative. But I guess that shows how little I know about this.

I can understand why, say, Cardinal Kasper could be considered something of a liberal, since he once drafted a document that encouraged divorced and civilly-remarried Catholics to receive the Eucharist, which was overturned by then-Cardinal Ratzinger, in his capacity as Prefect of the CDF. But, what have Cardinals McCarrick and Mahony done?

I admit, I don’t know enough about the domestic Church. I know a fair bit about the Church in Western Europe, but I’m rather lacking with the American Church.

Can anyone talk a bit more about this?

I know Cardinal McCarrick was criticized for praying to Allah at a inter-religious service with Muslims present. You can find that info on Bob Sungenis’ site "Catholic Apologetics International.com- Look in the archived section of his questions and answers or do a search on his site --type in Cardinal McCarrick—
