More troubling news from Germany:

“Cardinal Marx’s letter informed the Vatican that the German synodal process will continue as planned, despite recent instructions from the Vatican Curia and Pope, and will treat matters of universal teaching and discipline.”

“The letter was a response to the Vatican’s most recent intervention in German preparations for a synodal process, in which Cardinal Ouellet sent Cardinal Marx a four-page legal assessment of the German plans, which concluded that the Synodal Assembly is contrary to instructions from Pope Francis and “not ecclesiologically valid.””

The German bishops are out of line and their Church is pretty much off the rails.

They are trying to utilize this newfound interpretation of “synodality” to usher in female priests, same-sex blessings, lay preachers, and every other modernist novelty they can think of, then claim that it can apply to the universal Church.

It would seem that Pope Francis is in a bit of a quandary; he has preached against rigidity without adequately explaining what he means by this; he has been ambiguous with regard to what disciplines that touch on points of doctrine can be treated at the local church level; he has opened the door to the synodal process without any clarification as to what he means… so what does he expect; Cardinal Marx is simply taking him up on his ‘offer’. So it appears that Cardinal Marx is banking on Pope Francis being weak in his response, and it will be interesting how Pope Francis reacts.

Does somebody think he is Pope, and do somebodies think they are the entire Magisterium?

You’re right. Pope Francis has to share in the blame for this as well; he’s the one that’s been constantly preaching against rigidity, and for “synodality”, and “decentralization of the Church”. Well, this is an example of bishops taking him at his word.

I don’t understand why this is such a slow topic on CAF. Is it because it’s not a directly American issue? I’m pretty sure that if this goes through it is the biggest Catholic news story since the election of Pope Francis that doesn’t involve sex abuse…

I think it’s partially because threads from Catholic News and World News don’t appear on the main page. Post this thread in Moral Theology and it probably gets more hits.

I can understand World News threads not going on the main page but I think threads from Catholic News should show up there.

But yes this is a big story and it’s getting a lot of coverage in the Catholic media. It’s probably only going to escalate as time goes on, whether or not Pope Francis decides to step in and stop the Germans.

Why blame Pope Francis for the actions of a conference of Bishops. There is always someone trying to bring down the church from without and from within.

Is cardinal really setting a schism? Not yet. Pray hope and don’t worry.

I’m surprised its so slow moving as well. Frankly this strikes me as a lot more worrisome than the Amazon meeting that is getting so much press right now. This has real potential to create problems that will be very difficult to address.

This, and I think a lot of people are still in denial of how bad the situation has truly gotten in Rome. Others are sure that Pope Francis will step in and stop it and this will go nowhere. I wouldn’t be so sure about that. He didn’t stop them last time.

That us too low of a bar. A pope may not correct a Bishop for various reasons, that does not mean there is no problem with what he says.

Many Catholics in the USA are still wincing and licking wounds from troubles that don’t include clergy sex abuse. For about 25 years up to 2013, , my diocese suffered from numerous sacramental abuses including thrusts for female priests (female homilists) and pro gay agendas. Only here at Catholic Answers Forum did I come to realize my diocese wasn’t solo…there were many others experiencing the same ravages. I suspect that most people just want to carry on and work up from their own ‘ground zero’.

What the German synod represents is an ugly beast and I’m sorrowful for all those who are or might get dragged down.

Keep sharing, even if many don’t have it within themselves to discuss here. Most of the time, I just read what others say. I’m getting old and also weary of all the disruption but I keep holding tight to the Bulwark.

Thankful to God for CAF and members all these years. :pray:t4:

The Pope did correct Cardinal Marx. Cardinal Marx has decided to move forward against the Pope’s advice.

He is not free to speak against the teachings of the Church during a Synod of Bishops.
