I don’t know. It’s a computer rendering, which might give the picture an unnatural look. Kind of like the human characters in Toy Story, computer renderings sometimes just look odd.

Otherwise, its seems to be basically little more an outdoor band stand. Its just a roof, a crucifix, and an alter. When built for real I’m sure it won’t look quite so trekky 🙂
Wow. I must admit that I was more disgusted by the comments on that article than the actual design, though
Yeah, the comments were disgraceful. I stopped after two, feeling it necessary to hit “report” on one of those!

What’s wrong with this picture? I have to sit down and resist the urge to shake some sense into the person who approved this. I want to ask him what is wrong with you? What were you thinking? This is an abomination and if they have any common sense move it indoors to a great Cathedral.

I agree with another poster that the comments were disgusting.

Too often we zoom in on the aestetics rather than the message. It’s a large area with an enormous amount of seating which is required for such an event. I say let us focus on the Beatification rather than the surroundings. Besides from a structural point of view it looks as though it will have great lighting and sound. A great view from almost every position and kind of elegent in it’s design. I’ve seen some churches that look worse and are not laid out so well. The remarks on the blog were disrespectful and obviously from non-catholics.

Don’t judge it yet. I’m an engineer who has experience with software similar to what was used to make that photo. It is a very rough image that I could see many flaws in at only a glance, and that strange green hue that makes up a good portion of the object is just the default color for the program. From the looks of it they gave the blue prints to an intern and told them to build a 3-D model of the project for functional use and then decided to pretty it up for a press release as an after thought rather than hiring a graphic design artist.

It is hideous, plain and simple. And a tribute totally unbefitting of a man who equated aesthetical beauty to Gospel truths.

I’m sure Cardinal Newman will be just fine with the design.

Exactly! 👍

Also remember, its a temporary outdoor shelter. It would be a shame to build a beautiful Gothic shelter, only to have it immediately meet the wrecking ball!

On the other in my last post, I thought it looked like a bandstand. Maybe it will be recycled as such for the people living near the park after the pope’s visit ends.

I know there are some beautiful Catholic churches in England, although it’s not easy to find them. The true Gothic churches, however, belong to the Church of England. Of all that was tragic about that part of our shared history, I think losing those magnificent Cathedrals is right up there near the top of the list.

Westminster Abbey
Peterborough Cathedral
Yorkminster…and all the rest of them.

Not my favorite desgin, but perhaps they were thinking of the huge numbers of people that would come. Maybe this was an attempt to accomodate the crowds. Then again, it does look very futuristic rather than sacred.
