Hopefully nobody will object to the idea of this post, or its placement (if it should be moved, oh moderators, please make it happen).

I was reading another thread about each of us praying for a different cardinal, and thought that it might be a neat idea if we could have a “Cardinal of the Week” thread which, as its name implies, is about a different Cardinal each week. I could post a little basic information about the person, and then everyone could add other things that they know, and we could discuss the Cardinals’ lives, work, and theologies.

This week, I thought that I would start with Roger Cardinal Mahony from Los Angeles. Made a Cardinal on Friday, June 28, 1991, and with the official title “Cardinal Priest of Ss Quattro Coronati,” Cardinal Mahony has made the news recently for his stand against American immigration laws:

“In December, he wrote to President George W. Bush, urging him to reject the legislation. Then, on March 1—Ash Wednesday—Mahony went a step further. He told his priests and parishioners that if the law passed, they should ignore it and help immigrants anyway. For an institution that regards obedience as a virtue, it was a radical call to action.” (Newsweek, 10 April 2006)
I’ll drop off here, and leave this for someone else to pick up. Come on!–Share what you know of, or what you think of, this Prince of the Church!

I thought this was a GREAT idea – until you concluded with this invitation to gossip. I hope we can all resist the temptation to vent in public about our leaders that we don’t agree with. Why don’t we just pray for this man and leave the rest to God?

Agreed! I certainly didn’t mean to imply that we should gossip about their behavior. However, I find nothing in wrong in letting their examples–in this case, Cardinal Mahony’s opposition to current talks (at the federal level) about immigration–spark good conversation between us.

But, mostly, I thought that this would be a good way to learn about (1) the leaders of our Church and (2) issues that they face on a weekly basis and–because I can be lazy–by splitting up the research. :o Besides, I’m sure that there are going to be members here that have had personal interactions with the Cardinals that few others have had. (For example, I could talk of personal discussions with Bishop (hopefully-to-be-Cardinal) Olmstead here in the Diocese of Phoenix.
