The Cardinal was a good man. Assaulted by dreadful persecution in his later life but eventually vindicated. May he rest in peace. 🙏

Cardinal George Pell has died in Vatican City, aged 81.

Cardinal Pell, the former Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, died on Tuesday evening.

He was the Vatican’s top finance minister before he left in 2017 to stand trial in Australia for child abuse offences.

Cardinal Pell was in 2018 convicted of molesting two teenage choirboys in the sacristy at St Patrick’s Cathedral while he was Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996.

Pell always maintained his innocence and his convictions were quashed in a unanimous decision by the High Court in 2020.

After returning to Rome following his trial and imprisonment, Cardinal Pell was received by Pope in the Apostolic Palace on 12 October 2021. On that occasion, Pope Francis thanked Pell for his “witness.” In a pre-Christmas interview with Mediaset that same year, the Pontiff recalled the prescient work done by the Cardinal in the economic sphere, *pointing out that due to a “calumny” — referring to the allegations of abuse in Australia — Pell had had to “distance himself from this administration.”

So pleased that Pope Francis acknowledged the dreadful ‘calumny’ in there!

 
Crux - “According to the source, Pell will be flown back to Australia following his Vatican funeral, and he will be buried in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, where he served as archbishop for 13 years before moving to the Vatican.”
