Cardinal question

Why is someone addressed as Cardinal So&So sometimes and John Cardinal So& So at others?? Can anyone help?

When someone becomes a cardinal, the title “cardinal” becomes part of their name. For example, John Cardinal Smith. Sometimes, in the secular news a cardinal is referred to as Cardinal John Smith, but this is not technically correct.

I had someone explain to me that “Cardinal” is like a hinge that connects the first and last names. That is why it is in the middle not the first. Any comments? Oh by the way, I just noticed that today is my catholic answers forum anniversary. I joined one year ago today.

Actually our cardinal issued a memo some years back stating just the opposite. He asked that he be referred to and addressed as Cardinal XXXXX. He explained that these days the John Cardinal Doe is his alone to use on legal documents of the church.
