Short article in wich cardinal Ratzinger express his position about modern eseges.

Due cose sono importanti: rimanere scettici nei confronti di tutto cio che si propone come “scienza” e soprattutto prestare fiducia alla fede della Chiesa, che rimane l’effettiva costante, e che ci mostra l’autentico Gesù. Il Gesù che ci offrono i Vangeli è sempre il vero Gesù. Tutte le altre sono costruzioni frammentarie, in cui si rispecchia più lo spirito del tempo che non le origini. Tutto ciò è stato analizzato anche da studi esegetici: Quanto spesso le diverse figure di Gesù non sono un dato di scienza, ma piuttosto ciò che un certo individuo o un certo tempo ha ritenuto come risultato scientifico.

1. That link does not lead to the text, but to a site on which - presumably - it appears.
2. It is in Italian - most of us here are probably Anglophones
3. He says nothing to discourage new methods of study; and the 1993 document is written, in part at least, precisely in order to advocate them.
4. If it is an extract from a speech he made in 1988 - or before 1993 at least - here is what he said to introduce a document which was published in 1993.
5. So either he is being misunderstood, or he changed his mind.

7. One can very well “trust the Church” (whatever that means) & use “modern exegesis”; which you again don’t define, but one is left to assume you mean the approaches advocated in the 1993 document. Last time I looked, heeding the documents from the Vatican (of which this is one) was entirely compatible with being a Catholic.

What is not acceptable to the teaching Church, is the kind of Fundamentalism which would trap the Church in the year 1910 or so - such virtues as Fundamentalism may perhaps have are described in the document, but it is found wanting as a method. Unlike the others described.

Thank you for your post and links, not only the one you presented here but all your contributions. I sincerely hope that all who participate in any of this forum’s discussions take the time to study whatever you have to offer because I am sure that like myself they will learn something new and insightfull each and every time.

I am not trying to sound like a sycophant but I do look on you as the type of teacher I would hope for when studying scripture. Again thank you.
