“I believe, though, that in the long term the Roman Church must have again a single Roman rite. The existence of two official rites is for bishops and priests difficult to “manage” in practice…The Roman rite of the future should be a single rite, celebrated in Latin or in the vernacular, but standing completely in the tradition of the rite that has been handed down.”

There are more than two rites. Which one ought to be the “one”? The closest to the original, right? Many Eastern rites, such as the Maronite Rites, pre-date the Tridentine. Now that he is Pope Benedict XVI, remember that our Holy Father sees the two main rites as really just one. Re-read his declaration.

Read what he said. He is talking about the Roman Rite.

The Holy Father is saying that, in the long term, there should be one Rite, not the extraordinary form and ordinary form like he created----
I agree whole heartedly and was actually hoping he would reform the Paul VI missal initially and not do what he did—(in the Moto Proprio) but he is the POpe and I am an obedient Catholic—

You are correct, of course. In the Moto Proprio, however, the Holy Father insists that there is only one Rite even at this time. Did I miss something?

I think the Holy Father’s intention is clear that in time there will be only one form of the roman rite. And it won’t be the missal of 1962 or the missal of 2002. It will be something else.

Yep one rite expressed extraordinarily (Tridentine Mass) amd ordinarily-(Novus Ordo-Missal Paul VI)😃

I love our Pope…I think he is our single best hope at this moment in
time to bring together the various factions in the Church. I’m intrigued
at your comment. I wonder what the “something else” might be?

Actually, there are THREE forms of the Roman Rite:

The Ordinary Form (NO)
The Extraordinary Form (Tridentine)
The Anglican Use.

You can probably add Mozarabic and Ambrosian to that as well, since they technically also fall under the Roman Rite.

As a matter of fact, while they are part of the Roman Church, they are NOT forms of the Roman Rite, but are quite different, as you can see from their texts.

For one thing, the Mozarabic rite has a changeable canon.

Several points need to be addressed here.

First, the Anglican Use, while currently permitted, has not been elevated to the level of a rite yet, and is intended only as a transitional measure for parishes. The intent is that when a priest who converts from Anglicanism to Catholicism dies, the Anglican Use dies with him, and the parish reverts to a Ordinary Form parish.

Second, if you read anything that Benedict XVI has written, then you will know that the liberation of the Extraordinary Form is just one step in the long “reform of the reform” What is intended is that the Extraordinary Form will NOT stay static, but begin to be altered again, but this time, ORGANICALLY over time. We have already seen the beginning of this with the new Good Friday prayer. This new appreciation and reverence will hopefully influence the Ordinary Form, which will begin to evolve backwards until the point is reached when the two forms reunite into the same form once again, that was more in line with what Vatican II had originally intended. The thing that will be very difficult for some people to grasp, and that many have failed to pick up on, is that the Extraordinary Form has been liberated in the hope that it may one day be eliminated, after slowly combining the best elements of each, while maintaining the profound reverence seen in the old form.

Other examples of how this is happening:
The recent ad orientum Mass in Rome
The call for more use of Gregorian chant
The training of priests in Latin once again
