I find it improbable that the last three Popes have taken the position that a bad agreement is better than no agreement.
 
Yeah, I find this very improbable, at best. I don’t think there’s any alternate universe in which Popes John Paul or Benedict make the kind of deal with China that’s been reported.
 
The Chinese government is evil, any deal with them will be less than perfect. But the Church has done this sort of thing in the past. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. This is one area where I think the Catholic media has gone overboard with it’s criticism of Pope Francis. It has also, largely misrepresented the state if the Church in China prior to the aggreement. This is why I have a hard time trusting the criticisms.

At the end if the day, the Vatican has to decide how to keep the Church functioning in a very bad situation. Not an easy thing to do.

Reading the article it is an own goal. The claims that things are getting better as a result of this deal are laughable
