Cardinal Rigali: You Can't Claim to be "Reducing Abortions" but Publicly Funding them in D.C

WASHINGTON, July 1, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, chair of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, wrote to members of the House Appropriations Committee yesterday urging them not to fund abortions in the District of Columbia. Last week the House subcommittee that is considering the Financial Services appropriations bill for 2010 voted to permit direct public funding of abortion in the nation’s capital.

Cardinal Rigali said that the subcommittee’s action “effectively nullifies the Dornan amendment,” which for a total of 18 years has prevented public funding of elective abortions in the District. He said this move, “presumably the first step in a broader effort to restore such funding throughout the federal government,” is misguided for three reasons.

"First, he said, “public funding of abortion is rejected by the American people, as numerous surveys of public opinion have shown.” He also noted that Catholics recently sent “tens of millions of postcards to their elected representatives in Congress, opposing any weakening or reversal of current appropriations riders on abortion.”

I know many of us can recall how Catholic supporters of President Obama assured us that abortions would decrease if he was elected and democrats took control of the Govt. What I havent seen is any of them acknoweldge how terribly wrong they were.

If I were a paid advisor for pro-abortion folks who favored government health care, I’d say now is the very best chance they have to get full abrtion coverage. Lobbyists for every disease and condition under the sun are going to be looking for mandated insurance coverage for their pet condition. Abortion could slip through under the guise of providing the poor with the same access the rich and middle class now enjoy.

Cardinal Rigali is 100% correct and God bless him for standing up for the truth! You can’t claim to be “reducing abortions” and all the while have public funding for them. That is simply a total contradiction.

I’d like to see the RCC leadership take a more authoritive roll in addressing such blantant violations of church teachings.

Cardinal Rigali is 100% correct and God bless him for standing up for the truth! You can’t claim to be “reducing abortions” and all the while have public funding for them. That is simply a total contradiction.

But you have to take into consideration the fact that the same party that says they are reducing the numbers of prenatal homicides through public funding are the same people who were handing out free drug needles to addicts to prevent HIV infection through needle sharing.

Basic economic class: You want more of something you subsidize it, you want less of something you tax it.

Everything this administration has done is the opposite of its claimed intentions.
