Spellmsn was so famous and popular because he gave his support to some popular movements of the time such as anti-Communism and racial equality, because he played a big part in world politics and the Cold War on the side of the United States by convincing Catholic countries to be more pro-American, because he was a good fundraiser for the Church and because he was very influental in world politics.
 
His Eminence was also simultaneously Archbishop of New York and Vicar Apostolic for the Military Services, U.S.A. for almost 3 decades, not to mention that he was a life-long friend of Pope Pius XII. In addition, there have a few colorful stories about and statements by Spellman like that of him filling a boat with sheep and sailing on the Tiber at the time of the 1958 conclave in wishful fulfilment of one of the Prophecies of Popes.
