That’s the one thing I have never wondered. It seems really obvious to me. If a same-sex attracted man wants to be holy, the priesthood seems like a logical place for a man who isn’t going to marry anyway. If an SSA man wants sex with other guys, the priesthood is a way to get that without “coming out” and making a big scandal among their family and friends.
What other paths were same-sex attracted men being given in the Church, in 1980? Not many. Indeed, that particular situation has hardly improved…

Some of them were pushed into the priesthood by relatives, who started pushing at a young age.
Some of them sought out a career where they would have to be celibate, thinking that would keep them from having any unacceptable sex.
Some of them may have seen opportunities to be a predator and picked the career for that reason just like many pedophiles go into teaching or coaching.
And some of them perhaps genuinely wanted to be priests, but temptation got the better of them.

I think what ticks me off most about McCarrick is that he tried to fly under the radar with sex abuse scandals came to life two decades ago. If he would have come clean then and resigned, he would have done the Church a final service. Instead, he has contributed greatly to scandalizing those who see this as a problem that will never end. He chose his own skin over the Body of Christ.
