Apparently Cardinal Tobin took a lot of flak for Tweet #1:
Joe Tobin (@CardinalJWTobin) Tweeted:
When Jesus was baptized by John, he stood with all of us sinners seeking redemption. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the sinless Redeemer was reborn in grace as an example for us, and his Father was well pleased.
So the next day he came out with tweet #2:
Joe Tobin (@CardinalJWTobin) Tweeted:
A clarification of yesterday’s tweet: The Church teaches that Jesus’ eternal messianic consecration was revealed during the time of his earthly life at the moment of his baptism by John, when "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power” (CCC 438).
I’m really confused by the first one. And can anyone explain the clarification? I’m having trouble seeing how the second tweet relates to the first one. Some have suggested that Cardinal Tobin doesn’t write his own tweets?

Your guess is as good as mine. Being anointed with the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with seeking a redemption He was not in need of.
Some have suggested that Cardinal Tobin doesn’t write his own tweets?
It’s possible. “Nighty night, baby.”

It is an expression of the unity with Jesus as man and Jesus as God. It is us as men who are in need of redemption. Jesus as man went to be baptized because as he would not seek to be any different than we are. When the Father spoke out it was in recognition that he was the second member of the Blessed Trinity.

The first tweet is grammatically confusing. I read it as poche did, “Jesus stood with all of us sinners who are seeking redemption.” That’s acceptable.

It’s also possible to read it as “Jesus stood, seeking redemption, with all of us sinners who are also seeking redemption.” This clearly makes no sense since Jesus didn’t need redemption. Therefore, I revert to the first interpretation. However, this illustrates the problems of trying to get theological comments correctly expressed in a pithy tweet.

It is a tweet…
Who invented them and what for one wonders.
Sometimes one wishes they were restricted to birds only…🐦 🐤

I believe he did temporarily quit Twitter after the “Night night, baby” incident, but I guess he though he was ready for another attempt. Maybe he should consider giving it up again for Lent this year, or maybe forever.

I guess the phrase “sinless Redeemer was reborn in grace” caused the most head scratching.

I saw this the other day. I can see why people are confused. I feel like the clarification tweet misses the point of what people were confused about with regard to the first tweet.

I know some people have been shouting “heresy” and all that. I really just think it’s phrased poorly. I don’t think he’s trying to say that Jesus needed redemption or anything like that.

I had thought Cardinal Tobin was quitting Twitter, but apparently not.

I think that when we hear and see these things we should interpret them with the mind of the Church.
