Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington has issued a pastoral letter, dated Pentecost Sunday, on "why it is so crucial that we reassert and strengthen our Catholic identity, and that our …

As I lived through the same time period, I did not notice too much watering down of what young Catholics needed to learn but it was happening. There were dissidents who attacked the Church, confusing Catholics and modifying or denying them the full truth. This in cooperation with dissidents outside the Church who viewed her as their primary enemy in restructuring society in their image, likeness and desires. They worked very hard. In a few cases, we didn’t see it happening until the poison had begun to take effect. The flock began to scatter as the then “modern” society overwhelmed them with false freedoms, deception and vice. I watched as people I knew began to gradually succumb to the false teachers, while believing they were “free.” “You don’t understand, man. We got freedom!!”

God bless Cardinal Wuerl.

What is the Catholic identity that Cardinal Wuerl speaks of? It wasn’t too long ago that he advocated giving communion to those same dissidents you speak of.

I think he was quite specific. “Those years of experimentation left many Catholics weak, spiritually and intellectually, and unable to withstand the tsunami of secularism that came in recent decades,” he continued."

Our Catholic identity, our trust, was abused and we were lied to. The radicals and dissidents who preached that there was no right and wrong meant freedom, primarily freedom to satisfy the flesh. Eastern mysticism became purposely popularized. I recall walking into a bookstore right off the Wayne State University campus in the 1970s and it was filled, floor to ceiling, with books about this. Soon, people had swamis, maharishis, yogis and yoga. While they thought they were free, they had only agreed to what the leaders of a sub-culture told them.

Sex with anyone.

Use of illegal drugs was cool and promoted, including the dangerous hallucinogen, LSD – “expand your mind!” George Harrison had gone to the then famous Haight-Ashbury, a district of San Francisco, hoping to find peace, love and creativity. Instead he found people living in squalor and none of the hype of a “new way.” He went on to say he had some LSD in a bottle and threw it in the trash, disappointed by what he saw. It was an empty promise.

Freedom from religion, especially Christianity.

And everybody could “do their own thing” which meant anything. “Hey man. Your thing might not be my thing and my thing might not be your thing, but whatever your thing is, it’s cool.”

That is called anarchy. No right and wrong leads to anarchy.

If you could provide a reference to Cardinal Wuerl advocating communion to these same dissidents, I would appreciate it.

Best,
Ed
