Vatican watchers say there is no clear favourite in the conclave that gets underway in Rome tonight but three names have emerged as frontrunners - Odilo Scherer, the charismatic archbishop of Sao Paulo; Italian conservative Angelo Scola, head of the powerful Milan archdiocese; and Marc Ouellet, a Canadian who holds a senior Vatican position, reports AFP in The Australian.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/cathnews/RSS/~4/zsGB23zmvco

“Most of the cardinals will have suites with a separate room for a desk and a telephone - an internal one only, as no communication with the outside world will be allowed throughout the conclave, which Vatican watchers expect to last several days.”

There’s something to be said for the old way, when cubicles were separated only by curtains. Folks housed in such close quarters couldn’t help but overhear conversations and bump into people they might not otherwise talk to, giving them a chance to contemplate things they might not have considered.

Now each man has a private alcove and can easily isolate himself away from anyone except those folks he is already pre-inclined to talk with. That’s not necessarily a good thing.

I personally think it would be interesting if part of hte Conclave procedure was to keep a record of the voting results for various rounds and release it after the conclave had completed.
