Career vs. Your College Degree? How did you choose after college?

Whatever makes you happy is fine as long as it also makes you money. I can be happy in a variety of jobs as long as they pay me.
Totally agree.

I don’t make a lot of money and I’m not in my first choice job but I get paid, I’m glad to get it, and I give thanks to God twice a day that I have the job. Lots of people don’t even have that.

the military may be a great option; it worked for me

you can gain some maturity, collect a paycheck, serve your nation & see the world

at the end of your obligation you can decide if you want to make the Navy a career or not…
Absolutely agree with that.

Something I’ll always regret, now that I’m too old to join the military.

When I was in high school, my dream goal was to be a video game designer/developer. That was it, I didn’t really consider anything else. When I finished high school and started at community college, I took some programming classes and realized I hated programming. With no plan B, that was tough. Muddled around for a few years before getting into general IT. That’s where I’m at now. It’s boring, personally meaningless, but it pays the bills.

Have you ever considered piracy? You’d make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts!

(Sorry, that just popped in my head and I couldn’t resist)

@Lara I know money is an undeniable part of medicine. That isn’t where my problem lies. My problem is with regulation of medical interventions (government or hospital) - requiring interventions for a presenting case that lead to more money for the institution but are damaging to the patient’s health or not the most effective course of treatment. There’s a lot more moral issues as well, but I won’t get into that. The main purpose of this topic was I wanted to hear how the careers of others progressed because I think it is an interesting topic. 🙂 Thanks for the advice, forensics has always been interesting to me as well!

@brian_custer Thanks for the advice! I looked into the military in high school and did not qualify. I’ve been self-sufficient for 6 years. I’m not saying it’s been easy, but by the grace of God I’ve made it this far. I’m trying not to delay figuring out my “life course” too long as I’m not getting any younger and if I continue in a medical profession I’ve got a long road ahead of me 🙂

@cookie-san That was so good to hear! Thank you for sharing.

@bettercallpaul Wow, you have lots of different experiences! I don’t consider any form of education wasteful. I am very grateful for my education even though it is unclear how I will use it at this time. Learning is always such a privilege. God bless!

@MonteRCMS What a great story. Like you I also love to learn and am a bit of a book worm 🤓 I bet you learned a lot through your travels as well - I hope to be as lucky one day!

@signit I feel the same way! I’m very thankful to have a job as I know some who have very much struggled to find one since finishing undergrad. It’s not my first choice and sometimes seems harmful to my well-being, but for now it pays the bills. It’s not as easy as some make it out to be, especially to find a job making a living wage + enough to pay off student loans (of which I have much less than many of my colleagues). All jobs in fields related to my degrees required several years of experience, which is disheartening, because I do sometimes think I would enjoy working as a medical microbiologist. Just something else to look into for grad degrees I suppose 🙂
