During the years when I was in elementary Catholic school pre-Vatican II, an order of religious sisters provided teachers for the school for essentially no pay. They had a convent next to the school, the parish took care of their day to day needs, but there was nothing in the way of a retirement plan. Now there are many nuns who are elderly and need care. These women have given of themselves generously throughout their lives. I for one will try to be generous with the annual collection which is intended to help support them in their old age.
