I swing from pendulums. I attend mass and receive the sacrament of reconciliation often but I commit mortal sins, which I do not want to stop, but I should. I do not think family and friends will believe me if I follow God as earnestly as I would like to. When I commit sins - they are full-blown and they are quite well-known. I was wild out of control teenager, I still have some of those tendencies. I know the consequences of extreme sins. I have faced the consequences of one-night stands, unprotected sex, fist fights, drunkenness, envy, but I am thinking how is not going to church still a sin (where is the harm), having sex with your bf/gf or fiance, getting drunk once in a while, resenting someone secretly. Since I cannot see the consequences, are they still serious sins?

Sins that separate you from God (mortal sins) are serious. that’s why they’re called “mortal”. They kill your relationship with God.
Sin is not contingent on whether or not people can see us doing it. We are good people not because we want to convince others that we are good, but because we want to be God because God loves us and gives us life, with the promise of eternal life when we obey His commands.
You would not care what people thought of you if you realized how seldom the do.
One night stands, unprotected sex with anyone are both grave sins. One destroys the dignity of the other person as well as oneself with sexual sin. Sex is properly ordered for two married people. it is an expression of their love and is open to life. You probably know this, but you think “what’s the harm?” It’s a grave matter because you put your soul, and the soul of the other person in a state of peril. What if you were to die with that mortal sin on your soul? Disaster. For eternity. Eternity is a long time, friend.
Fighting, drunkenness…are you kidding? How is expressing hatred not a huge deal? Drunkenness only makes those other sins worse, because you lose the ability to think straight and STOP doing the bad behaviors.
Not going to Church is to deny that you love God enough to worship Him, pray with your church family, receive Him in Eucharist and give thanks fro the blessings He has already given you. Pretty arrogant. If you had kids and they thought nothing of disrespecting you and ignoring you when you invite them to your table, you’d be hurt and disappointed.
Not remaining in a state of grace so that you can go to Mass and receive Eucharist hurts yourself. It’s not about showing and making an appearance for appearance sake.
God knows who is missing.
Resentment. That’s the same as harboring hatred, envy, all of those things that put your soul in a state of turmoil. Just because you think that people don’t know what it is in your heart doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t. These things poison your spirit. It begins to show in a person’s attitude, even facial expressions. But the biggest harm is to YOU.
To your relationship with God.
Sin puts a wedge between you and happiness. It limits your access to perfect love.
It clouds your responses when others need love.
Maybe pick up the catechism and read the sections pertaining to the definition of sin, and why this hurts the Lord and damages your soul. Not all wounds are visible. But they hurt even worse than physical ones.
This is probably one of the best times to think about it. We’re coming up on Holy Week.
Read about the Lord’s passion, and the wounds He suffered for you. Perhaps watch the Passion of the Christ movie. Sit in church and reflect on that crucifix over the altar. Think about what Jesus went through to save all of us and bring us back.
Powerful stuff. Humbling at minimum. Achingly beautiful. Love. He gives it to us.
We must give it back to Him. They way to do this, is to avoid serious sin. We’re all human. Venial (small sins happen, and we repent, we try harder. But we MUST actively avoid all mortal sin. Our eternal lives are dependent on this. It’s one piece of the mission we all have, It affects the vocation that He has given you, whatever that may be.
Peace.

Yes they are still serious sins.

Your post seems to have been written in a hurry…and there is a lot there…so I’m not sure if I am reading it right.

What I see in the above is the all to common tendency to try to justify sin.

You say you do not see the harm…
Have you truly looked for the potential harm?

Remember that the root of our faith - and the measure of something being a sin - is Agape Love. Wanting the highest good for another.
The two great commandments are to Love God above all else, and to Love your neighbor as yourself. Love is what we are called to be perfect in (Mt 5:48).
So - how much do you love God if you can’t be bothered to go to mass once a week?
How much do you love yourself if you get drunk and kill of brain cells?
How much do you love your boyfriend or girlfriend if you draw them into sin through sex or some other poor behavior?

The harm relates to Love…If love is harmed…there is harm to your soul.

Peace
James

Sorry for all the typos, but I think you get the gist of what I meant. I was in a hurry this morning.

My point was I used to do those things. I try hard not to now but, I do not think my parents/family will believe me now that I am trying to change.

This may very well be true. So it’s up to you to prove them wrong. 👍

Very often the reason people either don’t believe you are trying - or more likely - don’t believe you will succeed in changing is because they have been disappointed so many times before. This is especially true for people who have known you for a long time.
Parents can often see their children heading down the wrong road and try to prevent it…only to be ignored and rebelled against.
They have been hurt both by the child’s actions and also by what they might see as their own failure to prevent the child from falling into the dark places.

The skepticism is a defense against further hurt. For them, whether it be family, friends, employers,or whoever else, the proof must come from you. Not in words but in actions…consistent action and evidence of a changed life over time.

You need to allow them this skepticism - this doubt - and use it as a spur in your own life to stick with and be successful at the changes you seek.

God bless you for wanting to change and may God give you the strength you need.

Peace
James

Well. you can be assured of our prayers. Soon they will begin to understand that you are different now…and trying hard.
God bless.
