Merry Christmas to all!

 We're going to southern California over the New Year and on Dec. 30 we're in Carlsbad. Any thoughts on good parishes there? We're probably going to be in San Diego on Saturday afternoon and are considering the Cathedral that evening.

 Also, I found out that California dioceses do not have January 1 as a Holy Day of Obligation. Anybody know why?

It is not a holy day because we are a bunch of hippies. 🙂
Actually I don’t know why.

There are some pretty crummy parishes and some pretty good ones out here.
St Mary’s out in Escondido is very good. I am not so sure about close to the coast or down south, maybe someone else can pitch in.

You might check out the San Luis Rey, Franciscan, Mission or the Benedictine Prince of Peace Abbey. They are both a short distance east of Oceanside, which is just north of Carlsbad. Both are well worth a visit.

Re Jan 1 not a day of obligation in Southern California, it was a decision of the bishops some years back. I don’t recall the rationale; it apparently didn’t impress me.
 
I like the Mission San Luis Rey Parish in Oceanside. I live East of there in Rancho Bernardo but every now and then make it to the Mission. The Friars are great! Full of energy. But one caveat, they do not hold mass in the actual mission. It is held in a room on the Parish campus.

Last question first: some would be tempted to say it’s because we have some liberal bishops out here, but I won’t say that. 😃 First question: don’t know about Carlsbad, but for Saturday if you want to feel like you’re in a beautiful Italian church, try Our Lady of the Rosary downtown. The Cathedral should be a good choice also; I hear the pastor now has some wonderful orthodox priests helping there. This is from a friend who goes there.
