Carmelite Cross

Hello,

In the cell of a Carmelite Nun, there is a Cross without a corpus. This is to represent the Cross of the Nun and that she is to be the victim upon it.

Does anyone know if this is done in the male Carmelite communities or by Carmelites in general (lay and religious)?

I cannot say about Carmelites, but Capuchin Franciscan priests wear a rosary on their cinctures, which the cross is likewise corpus-less and for the same reason as you have indicated.

With Benedictines, some of them anyway, there is on a monastic nun’s cell door (for one) a cross without corpus as a reminder she is nailed to the cross and to embrace it. I think this may be pretty well the custom with monasteries - unsure.
