The 100 year old nun says she is a Carmelite, not Discalced Carmelite
The 100-year-old sister is indeed an OCD (Discalced Carmelite), as is their entire Baltimore Carmel monastery if you poke around on their website. You can google the names of the nuns and they come up on other websites as “Sister Judy Long, OCD” and so forth.

Here is an article written by the sister in question showing the OCD.

I did brows their website, Meet Our Community - The Carmelite Nuns of Baltimore, but didn’t see OCD. The Discalced Carmelites and O’Carms usually put OCD or OC, after their name to distinguish between the two.

It may be that the sisters aren’t adding OCD at the end of their name, for some reason ? I don’t know.

The Secular Order section did have OCDS for the president of the Secular Order.

Also, I never saw Discalced Carmelite Nuns wearing white and not in their traditional brown habits.

Not a big deal, just different from what I’m use to

These sisters are Discalced Carmelite Nuns. Their community is the oldest continuous religious community in the US. They have always enjoyed papal approbation and full approbation by their order. There is no “papal order” that nuns wear habits.

They are OCD. They have always been OCD. in appropriate situations, these are the initials they use.

They wear the white garment as a prayer garment, in chapel. They are hardly the only community of sisters or nuns to do this–and to wear other garb in other situations.

Honestly, I saw this as an opportunity to share the wonderful story of a remarkable and holy woman. The obsession here with incidentals is really remarkable to me. And, I have to say, sad.

I will not be posting again. I don’t want to be exposed to this sort of stuff, and I certainly don’t want to expose the sisters I know to this sort of uncalled for criticism, especially about superficial things.

I’m sorry, nunsuch. I thought it was a lovely thread.

I’m currently discerning a vocation to OCDS and I love that the US has had them in our country for so long, and the dedication of these nuns.

And an unexpected benefit of one of the comments was I found the article by Sister Mary Eileen, which I plan to read.

I understand that posting on here can be very discouraging and I don’t blame you at all, but I hope that sometimes we’ll still be able to read inspirational stories of religious and priests on here.

I very much enjoyed the thread and the video! Although I understand your desire to protect the people you know and care about, I hope you’ll reconsider. I love reading the stories of men and women religious. If not for this sub forum, I would not often have the opportunity to do so.

Only on CAF could a thread celebrating the birthday of a 100-year-old cloistered nun who has spent 78 years in her community turn into somebody bashing her and her fellow nuns for not wearing a habit.
Exactly. I’m fine with having discussions about habits and such, but this is not the thread for that.

Why can’t we just congratulate a sister for her incredible milestone and leave it at that?

I appreciate those who have posted in support of Sister Eileen and her remarkable life. Feeling much better! And I will pass along your good wishes via my good friend in the monastery.
