Hi!

I have been away from the church for some time now and have recently been inspired to do some reading based on some passages that I have read from Saint John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, etc.

Outside of primary sources, I am having a bit of trouble finding detailed books related to the tradition-Most of the books I am seeing are very short (i.e. 150 pages).

I have just ordered ‘Fire Within’ by Father Thomas Dubay. Can anyone point me in the direction of more resources related to the [Discalced] Carmelites, the Contemplative charism, etc.

Thanks!

I’m journeying towards becoming a lay Carmelite myself. As part of our ongoing formation we’ve read “A Pattern for Life” by Patrick McMahon. It’s helps the Lay Carmelite apply the Rule of St Albert to our daily lives.

We’re now reading “Carmel School of Prayer” by Joseph Chalmers.

FYI, McMahon and Chalmers are O.Carm, resources, not OCD/OCDS. Good stuff but the OP specifically asked for Discalced materials.

The Collected Works of St Teresa of Avila and the Collected Works of St John of the Cross
published by ICS.

You want the translations by Kieran Kavanaugh, OCD and
Otilio Rodriguez, OCD not Allison Peers.

It isn’t that Peers isn’t accurate, it’s just that the translations by Translated by Kieran Kavanaugh, OCD and Otilio Rodriguez, OCD, are more up to date in today’s language.

Both are what we used in formation in the OCDS group.

Note that generally, having a spiritual assistant to help guide you as we did in our OCDS group, is beneficial.

However, if that’s not possible, the Fire WIthin is a good choice you made.

Jim
