Casey will run for Santorum’s seat; rivals drop out

By BOB WARNER

warnerb@phillynews.com

After weeks of courtship by national Democratic leaders, state treasurer Bob Casey Jr. announced yesterday that he’ll run for the U.S. Senate next year, trying to unseat two-term Republican incumbent Rick Santorum.

And in a move - rare for Pennsylvania Democrats - to unite early behind a single candidate, former state treasurer Barbara Hafer said she would stay out of the race, at Gov. Rendell’s request.

Another potential candidate, former U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel, said he has also decided not to run and told Casey yesterday morning.

“I think the party has united behind Bob,” Hoeffel said. “I believe he has the best chance of beating Rick Santorum, and that’s the most important thing for me.”

The announcements set up next year’s Pennsylvania Senate race to be one of the nation’s most heavily contested, closely watched races.

Some national Democrats are said to be anxious to take the scalp of a top Republican to avenge the defeat last fall of Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota. Santorum, the third-ranking Republican in the Senate as Senate Republican Policy Chairman, would fit that bill.

In addition, the anointing of Casey, a longtime foe of abortion-rights, as a favored Democratic candidate reflects an emerging view that the party has to avoid litmus tests on social issues to remain competitive with Republicans.

Santorum, 46, won the Senate seat in 1994, beating incumbent Harris Wofford by 87,000 votes as Republicans capitalized on missteps in the first years of the Clinton administration. In 2000, Santorum was re-elected with a solid 327,000-vote margin, over western Pennsylvania congressman Ron Klink.

Casey, 44, the son of the late Pennsylvania governor, inherited much of his father’s popularity and political organization, handily winning two terms as auditor general and piling up 3.3 million votes in his race for state treasurer last November - the biggest vote total ever run up in Pennsylvania, 415,000 votes ahead of John Kerry.

Casey’s only political misstep was the 2002 Democratic primary race for governor, where he started as the favorite but rarely displayed as much energy or charisma as Rendell.

He could face the same problems against Santorum, who has spent the past 14 years dealing with federal issues, polishing his political skills and distributing millions of dollars in federal aid.

But in a prepared statement yesterday and follow-up telephone interviews with reporters around the state, Casey said his experience dealing with problems of Pennsylvania citizens gives him plenty of insight into national issues.

“The middle class in Pennsylvania often wonders who’s gonna be on their side and fight the battles they need fought in Washington,” Casey told the Daily News. “We’re just not seeing those battles fought today.”

Casey sounded several populist themes.

“We’re seeing virtually no action that brings down the cost of health care,” he said. “On Social Security, there’s lots of action, but in the wrong direction. And on trade, what a lot of families are seeing is a hemorrhaging of jobs, brought on by an unfair trade policy, a deficit growing by hundreds of millions of dollars, and tax cuts for millionaires.”

[start writing those voter guides!!!]

As a Pennsylvanian all my life up until I was married six months ago, I have always admired Rick Santorum for his faith, morals and values. I think he would make a wonderful President but in all honesty I wonder if he would be able to win because of his religion.

I really do miss PA…I don’t even want to get started on the disaster of NY politics! Terrible mess this state is in. It is a shame because the area I live in beautiful, but almost impossible to enjoy living here due to the taxes and other economic difficulties.

God Bless

Sandy

Has he abandoned his father’s defense of life?

K2 is now rooting against Risk Santorum?!?!?

I would venture to say that he is the most Catholic politician alive today. Living in PA with the Casey’s in PA, I can tell you, they will pay lip service to the pro-life cause, but they will not buck the party and DO ANYTHING to support it.

You mean like how Sen. Santorum bucked the Republican party and refused to support Specter when President Bush pressured him?

I agree that was bad, maybe even sinful. I think that Casey is pretty solidly pro-life. However, if it were my vote I would still have to go with Santorum, because right now the Democrats have death written into their platform. Any election of a Democratic Senator sets back the cause of getting pro-life, pro-constitution judges confirmed. Judicial nominations are the most important front in the battle to overturn Roe v. Wade.

AACCK! K2 has been suspended and can’t contribute. I do so love seeing her step right up to the line and work soooo hard not to cross over it into uncharitableness.

I hope Casey beats Santorum and James Langevin beats Chafee in 2006.

Santorum is becoming too Republican and too politically oriented. Take HIS recent minimum wage amendment for example, it would have eliminated the 40 hour workweek and lowered the minimum wage for thousands of workers. He is hanging around the Industrialist Republicans and beginning to think like them.

“The amendment would replace the 40-hour work week with an 80 hour two-week accounting period that would change the calculation of overtime hours. Under current law a worker who worked 50 hours in one week and 30 in the next gets 10 hours of overtime pay. Under the Santorum amendment the same worker would receive no overtime pay.”

Business could have require more people to work weekends (Sundays)/12 hour shifts (and for less money) because of Santorum’s amendment. Both of these ends are very un-Catholic.

On MANY issues (other than abortion, death penalty, and war - the life issues) Santorum is on the anti-Catholic teaching side of the argument. When voting Catholic, not party, I would take Casey over Santorum any day.

I hope Santorum changes before 2008. And I wish more elections were between great men like Santorum and Casey… this nation would be MUCH better off.

I wasn’t happy about his backing Spector, but sometimes we don’t have the full story. It seems like there were things we didn’t know. I constantly write to Rick about the upcoming laws or laws that need to be put into place regarding abortion. I ALWAYS GET A RESPONSE and not just the kind that say we got your letter. It is always a dictated letter to me about what he is working on and talks exactly about what I wrote. Not just a form letter that Spector sends. I appreciate it. I may be one person, but I sure can talk!!!😉 Anyone that listens to me, I praise Rick and his wife. They have been a great example to their faith. We don’t always know what is going on, but I see Rick right beside our President and I think that is good. I hope he makes some big differences in the abortion laws.

Blessings,
Helen

katherine2 never crossed the line? Your line must be very far out there. She called my mother a ‘hussy’ and invited me to meet her and her sons anwhere, anytime. What got her suspended? I personally won’t miss her since she was on my ignore list.

RE: K2…I think it was because of her posts in the “5 Non-Negotiables” thread in the Moral Theology Forum.

Santorum’s image in Pennsylvania (especially Western PA, from which he hails and where I live) took a big hit in recent months when it was revealed that he and his wife had enrolled their kids in a free “on-line” educational program provided by a school district in which they own rental property, but do not live, and to which they do not pay taxes. (They actually reside in Virginia.) I think that he might have had a very, very difficult time defeating Barbara Hafer had she won the Democratic nomination. With Casey running against him, a pro-lifer (and a Catholic) wins either way.

There is no reason that I can think of to doubt his commitment to the pro-life cause. and he is much more in line with Catholic teaching that is Santorum on some social issues; Santorum - whom I respect very much - has nevertheless always had a tendency to side with big business and the rich. If Casey is like his dad, he will be “kinder and gentler.” GO BOB!!!

I had abandoned the Democratic party over abortion and related issues. I consider myself an Independent. But now I feel renewed SOME renewed hope for the Democratic party - the party of Alfred Emmanual Smith!

I know, Lance, that she did cross the line with you. Those threads got shut down and she behaved herself a little better for a while. I was really trying to tweak her a little. She mentioned in another thread that she was a local official with the Democratic party (a precinct boss or something). I always tried to keep that in mind whenever she accused others of putting politics before faith. This also explains why she’s so excited that a pro-life Democrat is running for major office, seeing that they’re rarer than hen’s teeth.
