Cassocks: when was the last time you saw one?

My pastor made the discovery several years ago that a cassock was more comfortable and cooler and easier to clean than a suit jacket, so he wears casual black pants and clerical shirt around the office or when running ordinary errands. However, when a jacket is in order, he wears cassock (hospital calls, formal meetings, etc.)

When I first read the title of the thread, I thought you meant Cossack (Russian military group). 😃

My parish priest wears his routinely. Another priest in the diocese that I know also wears it regularly.
 
Gosh, and my pastor celebrated Mass last night with his “civvies” on under his alb. :eek:

Nearly every Sunday I see cassocks on the priest and the altar boys here.

I haven’t personally seen it but my mom tells me that at her parish the priest wears a cassock. I haven’t been there for years.

Excuse me, but I believe we already have modertors. Why not just try and answer someones question instead 🤷 I was hoping someone would answer the persons question. I can understand why she asked.

The answer is that it is not vital to wear one. I think people think it’s cool and more orthodox. Another badge of honor for those Catholics who like this sort of thing. 🤷 Whatever makes you feel closer to God 👍

Our pastor from a different parish used to wear his casual shoes, jeans and an old shirt underneath. 🤷 He was 70 something and took care of the animals all day. The parish and rectory is out in the country and has a big barn for animals. He has donkeys, rabbits etc. In fact one of his donkeys was in the movie “The Nativity” This priest also founded our local food bank which now feeds thousands of hungry off the streets. It’s huge. He is actually very well known in our diocese. I don’t have issues with what priests decide to wear underneath their alb, it’s who they are and what kind of priest they are that matters. 😉

Most of the priests that I know wear Dockers and Polo shirts. Are you suggesting that dressing in clothes indistinguishable from other men makes them “cool and more orthodox”???
 
For those who said that their altar servers wear cassocks…would this include female altar servers?

Ahh well this explains all the threads you start! I take it you are not happy in your diocese?

When was the last time I saw one?

Today.

We see them every day at Assumption Grotto. Any priest assigned at Assumption Grotto wears the cassock from the pastor down to the associates.

We also have a religious order whose habit is the cassock (Order of Canon’s Regular of the Holy Cross).

The cassocks for me represent orthodoxy of faith and morals. I have not met a priest or seminarian yet that did not have his head on relatively straight with regards to Magisterial teaching (I mean, you normally won’t find a cassock-wearing priest who will baptize people in the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier).
 
I have a dear priest friend who wears a polo and black slacks to priest meetings. His comment is, “We’re all priests. We all know that we’re all priests. Why do we need to collar to prove it to oneanother?”

He and I get together for a meal several times a year. He dresses similarly when we go out for our meal. He does this because he doesn’t want to us to be bothered. It’s actually because he doesn’t want me to be inconvenienced by people coming over to talk to him. If he’s out of uniform, people will be less liable to recognize him.

The priest in the parish where I used to live would wear shorts and sandals or tennis shoes under his alb during the warmer months. That made for a very “special” look during the summertime. It’s a good thing this is Michigan and the summers are short!

The last time I saw priests and altar servers wearing cassocks was this morning at Mass. But I go to a traditional parish which offers the TLM every week, so that tells you something.
 
In my pastor’s defense, he normally wears clerics (black shirt/pants collar) when he’s officially in the office and for weekend Masses.

And the only time we have problems with him violating rubrics is when the exhaustion from his health problems and schedule kick in, and then he just plum forgets things (like he skipped the Gloria accidentally last night).

I can see where attire relates to reverence and orthodoxy, but that wasn’t the case with my pastor … although part of me wonders if he didn’t have somewhere to be right after Mass last night, which would explain the street clothes.

This morning before and after mass. Most of the priests at my parish wear the cassock. I don’t know if they wear them every day, but almost every time I see them on Sundays, they wear them.
