Is it a sin (and if so mortal?) to have casual drinks over a period and drive home. I’m not talking getting drunk and surviving somehow driving all over the road. I mean 2-4 beers over a couple hours and driving home?

Thanks for your thoughts.

**I think it depends on your size…how you tolerate alcohol. 2 to 4 hours, to have a 2 or 3 beers seems ok. But, again, it’s not about being falling down drunk, it’s about alcohol impairing one …even just a little, to the point where the response time could be less.

But, if someone has 2 to 4 beers in the course of an afternoon…stopping at least one hour before getting on the road, it should be ok.

I would say that it could* be sinful, if one deliberately drinks, to the point of not being in the best shape to drive, and then driving…it shows no concern for others’ safety. To the degree of sinfulness, I don’t know…but I don’t imagine someone would be completely non culpable, who goes about making choices, without the concern of others’ safety. Just my two cents.*

When you do this, does it put you over the legal limit? Do you have any way of knowing? Some people are impaired off just one drink. It’s tricky to know for sure, and we can feel fine, yet still be impaired enough to put other people in danger, under the limit or not. Therefore, I think even if there is a specific rule about drunk driving in the Catholic Catechism, you need to consider what your conscience tells you. Consider this: You may survive, even if you crash, because usually relaxed drunks fair far better than the victims in the other car who might have seen you coming but couldn’t get out of the way fast enough, but what if even just one person is killed or permanently disabled, especially a child, because of your choice? Can you imagine the extreme guilt of knowing what you did and having to live with it for the rest of your life?
Please, PLEASE be careful, and THINK BEFORE you even go out to drink, how you’re going to get home.
God bless!

Try to the above calculator to estimate your blood alcohol level. Also scroll down to the bottom to look at the charts. Impaired driving is sinful because you put yourself and others at risk.

I agree with all statements posted. I don’t drink to become impaired. I enjoy a beer or two while socializing over sports with friends.

I appreciate the adivce.

Thanks for this link. So, this is legally acceptable. It comes in at 0.02-0.04 which is less than 0.08 (about half at most) of the legal limit. Not going to tell you my weight:D

It still feels a little unacceptable in the eyes of my faith. I like the idea having a few beers and allowing the last hour to pass without (drinking a cola or water). Thanks for that thought.
